Broadway Across Canada’s current tour of Rodgers + Hammerstein’s CINDERELLA opened to an enthusiastic reception in Calgary last night (April 25, 2017)… and our family also got caught up in the magic! We all know the story, having seen both the ‘old’ and recent movies, but this live version – complete with some very modern twists – was a huge treat and well worth staying out late on a (gasp!) school night.
For fans of the Disney version of this story, all the key components are still there: the pumpkin, fairy godmother, magical carriage, wicked stepmother and step-sisters and, of course, the love story between Ella and her prince, complete with glass slipper. But the story also diverges from the Disney version in many areas and I think it’s much stronger for it. Cinderella, while certainly sweet, is also brave, imaginative, resilient and clever. The prince has grown up sheltered and has been (sort-of) groomed to be the future king, but is under the thumb of his main advisor and he still doubts his abilities, questions his place in the world and develops some decidedly democratic leanings. In fact, politics, activism and changing your world for the better are a key part of the story.
The stepsisters are also much more complex characters… one clearly has dreams of a different sort of life (and even gets a love interest of her own!) and the other is pretty nasty but also plucky and hilarious. She really brightens the show with her fabulously contemporary one-liners.
The CINDERELLA sets are lavish and the singing and dancing are top notch. But so much of the beauty of the production is in the costumes, especially at the special moments when a character transformation takes place (think old crone to fairy godmother, Ella from drab to ready for the ball). Don’t blink or you’ll miss these amazing moments, which last night caused the audience to gasp and applaud. They truly appear to make the impossible, possible!
Colourful, inspiring, jubilant and yet clearly focused on promoting kindness, compassion and persevering to achieve your dreams… this modernization of a classic fairytale favourite is great family entertainment.
CINDERELLA continues at the Jube through April 30, 2017.
