December is upon us and I’m determined to get photos of my son with Santa this year. Last year he was terrified of Santa and there was no way he was sitting on his lap. Since we went for a hair cut this morning I thought today was a perfect day to try getting that prized photo. It’s also early enough in the season that I hoped to avoid the line-ups you find closer to Christmas. We decided to visit Santa at the Bass Pro Shop in Cross Iron Mills Mall because the photos are free and line-ups are usually very short. I wanted to avoid having to wait in line for an hour at Market Mall just to potentially find out that my son was still scared of Santa.
We headed out to Cross Iron Mills around 4pm in good spirits planning to meet Daddy there after work. We chose the perfect time to visit the mall. Everybody was on their way home for dinner and we had the whole place to ourselves. We visited the play park and shared it with one other boy; no line-up, no waiting list, nothing. We went to the Indigo store and my son had two train tables to himself. The children’s section was deserted. We must have played in Indigo for a good half hour and my son was in heaven.
We made our way down to the Bass Pro Shop around 5:30 to meet Daddy and Santa. We were ecstatic to find out that there was only one other family in front of us to see Santa. There was no line-up and we had Santa all to ourselves. My son was still scared of Santa and wouldn’t go near him without clinging to Daddy but I’d much rather discover this in a relaxed setting as opposed to dealing with a tantrum in the middle of a crowded waiting area.
After seeing Santa we made our way to the Entertainment Zone to have dinner at Boston Pizza. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that there was a light show taking place in the same corridor. The Starlight symphony featured 65,000 LED lights coordinated to a Christmas soundtrack with lights hung from the ceiling and all around a giant Christmas tree. We were able to watch the free entertainment while eating on the Boston Pizza patio.
I highly recommend visiting Cross Iron Mills in the late afternoon this holiday season. We had a wonderful time and got home just in time for bed.
