Last night I went to check out the brand new Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria in McKenzie Towne. We’re always on the lookout for great family friendly places to dine with our kids. Famoso’s offers traditional style Neapolitan pizza in casual yet elegant atmosphere.
When we sat down a server came to get our drink order and explain how the process at Famoso’s works. It’s not your typical restaurant. When you have decided what you would like to eat you write your order on the notepad provided at the table and take it to the counter. You can either opt to pay for your meal up front if you are in a hurry or you can choose to run a tab and pay at your table the end of the meal.
I love this genius concept for family dinners with my kids. There is nothing worse than hungry kids impatiently wiggling in their seat while you are waiting to order your food and then waiting for the food to arrive. The pizzas are baked in a gorgeous bell shaped traditional, fire-roasting Italian pizza oven heated to 900 degrees Fahrenheit and only take 90 seconds to reach perfection. Nice and fast for those feisty kids.
Famoso’s has a great set up for young kids. Their menu offers half-size “pizzetta” portions for children. Nice touches like colourful plastic cups with a lid and straw and free gelato with their meal ensure kids feel special at Famoso’s.
This was my first experience trying traditional Neapolitan pizza. I’ve had wood fired pizza before but this was entirely different. I’m not sure if it was because the hand-tossed crust was crafted with highly refined Caputo flour or if it was because their imported tomatoes from Southern Italy’s Campania region were extra sweet or if it was the fresh fior-di-latte whole milk mozzarella topping but that pizza was one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had.
The prices are reasonable ($8.00-$15.00 per pizza) and the portions are big. I brought home half of my pizza and enjoyed it for lunch today. Although worth the drive, my only complaint is there isn’t a Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria in the NW yet (hint hint).
