Where to Enjoy Heritage Day? At Heritage Park, Of Course!

Heritage Park (Family Fun Calgary)
Some call it Civic Day, some call it Regatta Day (!), and we call it Heritage Day. No matter what you call it, it’s the August Long Weekend! That means it’s time to savour our too-short summer. BBQ’ing, camping, and hiking are all things we love to do around here in the summer, but instead of joining that long line of traffic on Highway 1 this year, stay in town and enjoy what our great city has to offer. And is there a better place to celebrate Heritage Day than our very own Heritage Park?

Heritage Park (How the West Was Once, as they say) offers a brilliant opportunity to travel back in time and see our heritage firsthand, celebrating where we’ve come from and where we’re going. There will be games, music, and treats to make the day even more special.

Authentic buildings and transportation will take you back in time as you walk in along the boardwalk, or take the steam train to the other side of the park, where a sternwheeler is waiting to take you on the water. Costumed interpreters add to the ambiance as they “live” and work in the Calgary and Alberta of many years ago, and these interpreters are a valuable resource as they answer questions and engage with guests, and show you how things worked. Kids of all ages will enjoy the chance to ride the ferris wheel or the carousel (which was originally set-up in Bowness Park), and sneak in a visit to the candy store.

Start at the Aboriginal encampment and learn some new-to-you games that were played long before the Europeans came, or chat with an interpreter about how to live in a tepee. The fort is right next door, and there you can learn how to be a voyageur and try on a fur. Stroll through pre-railway Calgary or poke your head into the sod house (and try to imagine fitting your kids into those tiny houses), or take a wagon ride around the park while a guide tells you stories. Once you reach the “town,” treat yourself at the bakery, check out the printing press, or ask the interpreters at switchboard to make a phone call. You can even play a game of croquet or make ice cream!

All special activities are included in the price of admission. No matter how many times you visit Heritage Park, there are always favourite activities to do again and something more to learn. It’s a wonderful place for the kids to run around and it has a lovely ambiance for family picnics, so consider turning your day pass into an annual pass, for remarkable value all year long!
