One of the best things about living in (or visiting) Calgary is the amazing view of the Rocky Mountains and the knowledge that they are just a short drive away. Together with the beautiful parks in the city, the enormous natural areas of the foothills, and sparkling local rivers and lakes, they offer a veritable wonderland for outdoor adventure sport enthusiasts. There’s another big draw for outdoor enthusiasts here in Calgary: Mountain Cultures, a passion-driven business specializing in ski, snowboard, and adventure sports equipment for the whole family.

Mountain Cultures, which sells both online at www.mountaincultures.com and in person at its beautiful NW Calgary store, is no typical big-box sporting goods store. Owned and operated by two former competitive winter sports athletes and lifelong outdoor sports enthusiasts, the store’s mission is to provide exceptional service and top-quality equipment to its customers, whether they be competitive athletes or weekend warriors.

President-Founder Jay Vaughan’s competitive moguls career spanned more than 15 years, earning him worldwide recognition as a World Cup Medalist. After 25 years of competition, training and coaching at all levels of his sport, Jay’s passion and drive are now focused on Mountain Cultures and sharing his love of the great outdoors with all. Vice-President Tyler Henderson has competed in moguls, skier-x, halfpipe and freeskiing events throughout Western Canada, and worked as a ski tech, ski patroller, and heli-ski guide, in addition to his personal pursuits of sled skiing, skateboarding, surfing and mountain biking. He brings his enthusiasm for all these sports to Mountain Cultures.

Winter outdoor enthusiasts will revel in Mountain Culture’s fantastic selection of downhill ski, snowboard, backcountry, and snowshoe equipment. Guardians of the next generation (aka parents) will appreciate the great selection of skis and snowboards for children, as well as all the gear that’s needed to outfit the whole family, from base layers to Go Pro cameras, gloves to goggles.

Jay says that one of the biggest mistakes skiers make when choosing their boots is basing their choice on shoe size; ski boots are much more complex to fit than athletic or street shoes. His staff is trained and experienced in custom boot fitting, and committed to spending as long as it takes to find you a pair that fits you correctly. Once you’ve made your choice, the service department offers complimentary boot shaping to ensure that 100%-perfect fit. They are also fully equipped to wax, sharpen, repair, base grind and otherwise keep all your existing ski and snowboard equipment in top condition.

For the summer adventure season, Mountain Cultures carries a wide selection of stand up paddle (SUP) boards, PFD life jackets, trampoline boards, skateboards/longboards, and apparel for the whole family. After all, you’ve got to have something to do between snowy days!

This statement from Jay embodies the spirit of the business and its level of commitment to its customers: “…MountainCultures and its merchandise will always embody my greatest passions: athleticism, quality, excellence and excitement”. Check them out in-store or online!
