October 2012

This past Wednesday I attended one of the most inspiring events I have been to in a very long time. We Day is an event for junior high and senior high school students with the purpose to motivate and inspire them to take action on local and global initiatives. There were over 18 000 students from 550 high schools in the Saddledome. The entire building was vibrating, as you can probably imagine.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into but realized tissues and waterproof mascara would have served me well. A number of celebrity guests spoke to the students including Martin Sheen and Larry King as well as amazing musical performances by Hedley, Light and Marianas Trench.

By far the most compelling guest was Spencer West, a man who lost his legs when he was five years old and last June hiked Mt. Kilimanjaro hand over hand raising money to provide water to villages in East Africa. Spencer announced he’ll be returning to Calgary in the spring. He’ll be walking from Edmonton to Calgary to raise money and awareness for the Free the Children’s water initiative.

Telus was one of the major sponsors of We Day and has partnered with Free the Children to help raise money for this worthy initiative.
