Bison FestivalOn Saturday, June 1, 2019, Elk Island National Park is hosting its annual Bison Festival. This afternoon of family fun will include games, speakers, Indigenous dancers, and the book launch of Through the Storm: Canada’s Bison Conservation Story.

While bison once roamed the continent by the millions, there were less than a thousand scattered in isolated herds by the 19th century. The Canadian government took an active role in rectifying the situation and founded conservation herds in national parks. Today nearly every plains bison you see in southern Canada, whether in conservation or domestic herds, had an ancestor in Elk Island National Park. This annual festival celebrates that success.
