The countdown is on… and there are so many exciting events going on this weekend! Enjoy one of the fantastic holiday shows going on around the city, including the final weekend of the Nutcracker, and for a holiday date night, check out the Barra MacNeils – A Celtic Christmas!

Don’t forget to catch up with the Jolly Ol’ Fella at one of his stops around the city including, the Shubie Park Tree Lighting, where he will help with the countdown and lighting up the tree!

Get those skates sharpened because the Emera Oval is scheduled to open this weekend. But, if mother nature decides not to cooperate, head indoors to one of the HRM arenas… many even have FREE family skating.

If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the malls, grab a hot chocolate and take a tour of the AMAZING light displays around the city. Here are 5 Family Events in Halifax and beyond to check out this weekend:

1. Halifax Lights Festival

The Halifax Lights Festival is packed with events this weekend! Last weekend’s events that got rained out have been rescheduled for this weekend, in addition to the events that were already on the schedule! Head to Argyle Street on Saturday for the ‘Chili Warm-Up and Family Fun Day’ and then to Cornwallis Park for the ‘Ice Sculpture Demonstration’ in the afternoon and the ‘Silent Disco Party’ in the evening. On Sunday you can enjoy ‘Rides on the Holiday Train’ and a ‘Visit from Santa’ at Cornwallis Park. The ‘Splendor in the Park’ light show and music in Cornwallis Park will entertain from 4:00 pm – midnight on Sunday with extended hours on Saturday from noon to midnight.

2. Caribou Clatter and Reindeer Matter

Santa and his Reindeer are getting ready for the BIG day and you can visit with them this weekend at the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park. Santa will be taking time out of his very busy schedule to stop by and feed his reindeer in the afternoon.

3. Christmas at Sea Family Fun Day

Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and enjoy a family fun day of ornament making at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

4. Tinsel, the Talking Christmas Tree

He’s back! The most famous ‘Sack-veg-an’ of the holidays, ‘Tinsel, the Talking Tree’ will be visiting Acadia Hall. Watch the kids in amazement as Tinsel comes to life and spreads holiday joy!

5. It’s A Rat Pack Christmas 

Prepare to be delighted with this production starring Geordie Brown and Heather Rankin. Treat yourself to a magical holiday performance on Saturday with either the matinee or evening show!
