From March 13 – 16, 2019, Alberta Ballet is presenting Shakespeare’s most beloved comedic tale, Bruce Wells’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Infused with sprightly energy, this 90-minute ballet is perfect for the whole family, as it’s lighthearted, vivacious mischief will pull you into the enchanted world of feuding forest fairies, hapless mortals, capricious gods, and the antics of a rascally elf named Puck.
March 14, 2019: We had the opportunity to see opening night for this wonderful ballet and I would recommend it to any family interested in the ballet, a night out, or wanting to try something new! There were plenty of kids in the audience, including very small children (our family would recommend this ballet for school-age kids and up, but that’s just us) and we found it helpful to know the story beforehand.
The curtain rises on a mysterious, magical forest scene where all the action takes place. The tangles of love between humans get even more complicated when the fairies get involved, and the King and Queen of the fairies are having their own troubles. The ballet is filled with a delightful joie de vivre, drawing you into the fairy world and offering a light-hearted ambience. The story is told with incredibly expressive faces and body language, making it easier for kids to follow the story, and sometimes it borders on slapstick. The antics of the mischievous fairy Puck are entertaining, funny, and often just ridiculous, to the delight of the kids and the ballet also incorporates many children into the fairy world, dancing as adorable sprites.
If you’re hoping to introduce your family to the ballet, I would highly recommend A Midsummer’s Night Dream. I have always been devoted to The Nutcracker as a family ballet, but this might be an even better option.
