The National Music Centre at Studio Bell and the Calgary Civic Symphony are once again collaborating to offer a “POP-UP ORCHESTRA” as their contribution to Alberta Culture Days.
“Build an Orchestra” will allow families and children to get up-close and personal with the instruments that form a symphony orchestra. Come and experience the individual instruments and then take the time to enjoy our mini-concert featuring world-renowned Calgary amateur pianist (and periodontist) Thomas Yu as he joins the orchestra.
Thomas Yu is one of the most recognized amateur musicians in the world. He has redefined what it means to be an amateur pianist, having performed with the BBC Orchestra of Wales, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. He has appeared as a guest soloist at Berliner Philharmonie, Carnegie Hall, Munich Gasteig, BBC Hoddinott Hall, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Symphony Hall in Chicago, Hakuju Hall in Tokyo, as well as Roy Thomson Hall, National Arts Centre and Glenn Gould Studio in Canada. He continues to delight audiences across four continents while maintaining a full-time career as a periodontist.
The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1975 as Calgary’s volunteer orchestra. Over the years, the Civic has swelled to over 80 musicians. With an interesting diversity in professions, its members come together each week to rehearse complex orchestral works. Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Rolf Bertsch, the Symphony shapes and polishes performances that are truly brilliant!
