Calgary Meals on Wheels was serving nearly 6000 students through its school programs, prior to COVID-19. When these services were interrupted, they kept going with their Weekends and More Program. Together with the Calgary Food Bank, Meals on Wheels has implemented new processes to provide Calgary students with kid-friendly, non-perishable food hamper packages through a special curbside pick up program.
The new version of the program has provided hampers to 380 families to date, but has the capacity to support approximately 600 Calgary families each week. If you know of someone who could benefit from this service, the program is available to all school-aged children from kindergarten to grade 12 in Calgary. Safe pickup is currently being offered at Southcentre Mall on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 10:30 am – 12:30 pm and 12:30 pm – 3 pm. Hampers are packaged by volunteers inside Southcentre Mall and then distributed at a designated outdoor pickup point using safe social distancing practices. Families are being asked to sign up at least 24 hours in advance to secure a pickup time, either online or by phone.
