Cyclepalooza is a ten day, do-it-yourself bike festival from July 12 – 21, 2019. It is a volunteer-directed and community-based festival focused on promoting arts, culture, events, and fun in Calgary. Anyone can add public events to the Festival Calendar and host rides, and anyone can join the rides already posted by others. Many of the events are family-friendly, and contrary to the name, bikes are not required! Any mode of transportation is encouraged, including rollerblades, scooters, or the power of two muscular legs and lungs to run alongside bikes for an indeterminate distance.
Cyclepalooza hosts one ride every year called Bike Prom; this year it’s on Saturday, July 20, 2019. Anyone is welcome to join in their finest (or most fun) attire for a leisurely ride from The Rise in St. Patrick’s Island starting at 7 pm and ending at the Sunalta Community Hall (8 – 8:30 pm) where there will be food and beverages available for purchase.
How can you participate? Either by showing up and joining one of the rides already posted on the Festival Calendar, or encouraging people to create and host their own! Hosting a ride is not as intimidating as it may seem and it’s a fun way to get the creative juices flowing and meet some amazing new people. To help get people started there is a video and how-to guide available at www.cyclepalooza.ca/the-ride-guide.
