From time to time, a local museum, gallery or public space will temporarily host an exhibit that families will enjoy and be welcome. Here’s what’s on in temporary or traveling exhibits in Calgary:

Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience at TELUS Spark

Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience is coming to Calgary’s science centre February 4 – June 4, 2017. Experience a “career day” at the Starfleet Academy. Test your knowledge and skills to discover what your true ranking would be in a Starfleet career – will you be a Medical, Engineering or Science Officer, or even a Commander? Exciting possibilities await in this immersive and interactive experience that appeals to life-long fans and new Star Trek enthusiasts alike.

Included with your admission to TELUS Spark. Group rates available for 15+ people.

A special Launch Night and several Adults-Only Nights are available, for anyone 18+. These will take place on February 3 (Launch Night), February 9, March 9, April 14 and May 11.

Getting on the Map: The Emergence of Calgary, Post-Confederation

This exhibit at Lougheed House uses a combination of reproductions and originals of early maps, photographs and artwork about Southern Alberta to tell the fascinating story of the Calgary frontier as it was in the 1870s and 1880s, more than 30 years before Alberta joined Canada.

2017 Earth Science for Society Exhibition

Earth Science for Society (ESfS) invites you to achieve a better understanding of the importance and impact of Earth Science in our everyday lives. Visitors, whether they are junior high through university students, youth groups or the general public, can take part in a wide variety of stimulating, interactive activities offered by enthusiastic exhibitors. This is a wonderful FREE opportunity for an exciting learning experience in Earth Sciences.

Something Old, Something New: 125 Years of Wedding Fashion

Anybody who’s into fashion (or happily ever afters) will enjoy this exhibit! Gowns and numerous wedding accessories from diverse cultural and historical traditions provide insight into how people went down the aisle in style, from the late Victorian era to contemporary times. The influence of mass-produced designs, royalty and the dawn of Hollywood are explored, along with same-sex and cross-cultural weddings. Many of the gowns in the exhibition were worn by Albertans and they reflect the cultural shifts of the past 125 years.

On June 21st, there’s an evening presentation on Bridal Bouquet History and Meanings.

Terry Fox: Running to the Heart of Canada

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame’s new exhibit in honour of Terry Fox is open from July through December 2016. Inducted in 1981, Terry is a universally recognized Canadian hero. Running almost a marathon a day, Terry Fox covered 5374 kilometers in 143 days. His goal was to raise awareness for cancer research and $1 for every Canadian at the time during his Marathon of Hope. Visitors to the exhibit will learn about Terry’s stories from before the run, his life on the road, his triumphs and struggles and what kind of impact he and his foundation have made over the years. Artifacts on display include the shoe he dipped into the Atlantic Ocean at the beginning of his journey, the shirt and shorts he ran in, along with iconic photos. Be inspired by a Canadian who dared to dream big and help others!

Admission cost: $8 – $12 per person.

Pomp & Circumstance: Celebrations of the Fire Department Kind

Imagine the glamorous days of a city and fire brigade where galloping fire horses and gleaming steam engines fill the streets. Envision a city where the fire hall is the Grande Dame of civic life, making the community a better place for all to be within her reach. This used to be Calgary!

Lougheed House is collaborating with Calgary Firefighters’ Museum to host an exhibition on the Calgary Fire Brigade’s history of ‘celebratory’ events and connection to the community.
