The LEGO Movie 2 seemed like a movie that might be fun to see, just because I love toys, LEGO, and light-hearted fun. But it’s been a few years since the first LEGO movie. I have to admit that I didn’t have high expectations, both because of the curse of the sequel and the reluctance of my own kids to head to the movie theatre on a cold night.
We were mistaken.
All of us, pre-teens, teenager, and adults enjoyed this movie from beginning to end. Bricksburg has been transformed, and not for the better and human kids have grown older, fighting over LEGO along the way. The LEGO characters have been disillusioned, but Emmett is as unwaveringly cheerful as ever, even though the DUPLO invaders have altered the LEGO world forever and now Ar-mom-ageddon threatens everyone.
The story is a classic one of being the real hero by being true to yourself and loyal to your friends. As a feel-good story, it avoids the saccharine with its clever puns and many humorous allusions and cultural references for the enjoyment of the adults. My kids thought they were too old for The LEGO Movie and only willingly came for the junk food, but they ended up loving it. They laughed all the way through, (so did the adults), and proceeded to repeat all their favourite jokes all the way home. One of my personal favourite moments involved the “Everything’s Not Awesome” song lyrics:
“. . . Everything’s not awesome
Things can’t be awesome all of the time
It’s not realistic expectation
But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try
To make everything awesome
In a less likely, unrealistic kind of way . . . ”
I feel like that’s a good mantra when you have kids in middle-school!
And there is one negative element to this movie. The songs really do get stuck in your head.
The much-anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed, global box office phenomenon that started it all, The LEGO® Movie 2: The Second Part, reunites the heroes of Bricksburg in an all-new action-packed adventure to save their beloved city. It’s been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are now facing a huge new threat: LEGO DUPLO® invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than it can be rebuilt.
