Ah, summer in Calgary — the warm days and long, light-filled evenings give families a perfect opportunity to step away from work, chores, and school. This summer, it’s time to take a break and make some memories. A destination like Heritage Park, right here in Calgary, makes it easy! Are you interested in ‘time travel’ or fascinated by vehicles? Perhaps your kids (or you!) love to go on rides. Maybe you want to find unique shopping, catch a concert, and enjoy dinner. With special events and everyday amusement, there’s something for every family, as Heritage Park has tons going on all summer long!

Everyday Fun

Weekends or weekdays, Heritage Park is your destination for everyday summer fun! There are so many ways to enjoy family time, experience history, and add something a little special to the average afternoon. The Park is filled with things to discover, treats to try, and animals to meet, making every day a new adventure. Ride the train and enjoy a picnic. Spend time on the water aboard the S.S. Moyie paddlewheeler boat or play an Indigenous game. Watch the street theatre performance, do your sums on a slate, and indulge all your senses this summer!

Special Events

Throughout the summer, Heritage Park adds special events to their everyday.

Long weekends hold extra fun. Canada Day is jam-packed with activities, events, and entertainment from around the world. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the diversity of the many people who live in this vast land. The Heritage Day long weekend is a celebration of summer and then you can end the season with Railway Days! (Okay, that’s actually not a long weekend. It runs September 9 – 10, 2023, but your little — and big — train lovers won’t want to miss it!)

But besides the long weekends, Heritage Park has planned some incredible summer events this year! The kids can even travel back in time while you work, with fascinating summer camps like the Frontier Artists Day Camp.

Relive childhood joy with Night at the Midway! Enjoy gourmet concessions, drinks, classic games, and turn-of-the-century rides like the Big Eli Ferris Wheel and Bowness Carousel. This event is geared to adults but children are welcome.

Adults who love history, or just enjoy original experiences, should check out the Prince House Lawn Dinner this summer. On three different dates, this Edwardian garden party will send you back in time as you dress up and enjoy an opulent dinner on the Prince House Lawn for an evening of decadence.

Adults or families with kids ages 10 and up will appreciate the hands-on learning with Honey Bee Hive Tours on a few select dates. Don your beekeeping suit and uncover the captivating lives of honey bees!

Food, Shopping, and Shows

If shopping, enjoying a show or concert, or a delicious meal is your style, there are lots of options at Heritage Park!

Elevate your Sunday afternoon with Tea on the Verandah pairing elegant finger sandwiches and pastries with a soothing cup of tea. (You can also find a Canada Day Tea.) Or you can experience what it was like to enjoy the finer things in life at the turn of the 20th century, as you treat yourself to lunch while travelling in style on the luxurious River Forth Dining Car. The River Forth Dining Car also serves a fabulous Afternoon Tea. Of course, Heritage Park has their usual high-quality dining during the summer, like the “casually elegant, uniquely vintage, distinctly Canadian” Selkirk Grill.

On two special dates this summer (July 21 and 22, 2023), check out Many Mothers, Seven Skies at the Canmore Opera House. Seven Women. Seven Elders. This dynamic stage production is about seeing the world through different eyes, perspectives, and focus.

Every Wednesday evening in July and August, come enjoy Music in the Plaza. Hear the city’s best-emerging artists at this series of free concerts. Watch from the Selkirk’s patio as you enjoy dinner, or explore the shops of the Haskayne Mercantile Block before you set up your lawn chair and enjoy the show with popcorn in hand!

You can also enjoy a summer’s evening at the Heritage Park Market Nights, every Saturday in the Plaza from 3 – 9 pm. Shop local vendors, explore the Plaza shops, and be entertained.
