We are so proud of Calgarian Amy Choi whose original artwork is now a part of Canadian history.

Amy participated in the My Canada, My Inspiration nationwide contest launched in 2015. Everyday Canadians were invited to submit coin designs that celebrate everything it means to be Canadian: the wonders of our country, our achievements, character and passions — and the vision we have for our future. Thousands of entries were made from every province and territory and Canadians cast over one million votes to select the ultimate winners – Amy’s design among them.

Amy’s design, Wings of Peace is the Royal Canadian Mint’s brand new 10-cent circulation coin celebrating Canada 150.

Her design depicts an airborne maple leaf that is clutched in the beak of a dove and forms the bird’s wings in one continuous flow. Amy’s mother, from Vietnam, fled the country during the war and came to Canada where she and her husband had four children. Amy’s design is a reflection of her parents’ experiences as new Canadians and hers as a first-generation Canadian.

Of her inspiration, Amy says she was inspired by “the hope that, one day, the offering of the maple leaf will be as symbolic as the offering of an olive branch. Since Canada is known world-wide for its desire to promote peace, cooperation and diversity, I was moved to combine the maple leaf and the dove as my way to show what I admire most about my country.”
The Wings of Peace coin is part of the Mint’s My Canada, My Inspiration collection
