Like many others, my parents enrolled me in French immersion in kindergarten, but being bilingual is something I have genuinely grown to enjoy and appreciate. Knowing multiple languages is a valuable skill that can help bridge and break down barriers in everyday life. However, finding ways to participate in French language or cultural activities in your community isn\u2019t always easy but there are options including the National Ambassador Youth Forum (NAYF)<\/a> through French for the Future, an organization whose mission is to promote the benefits of bilingualism, develop lifelong learning of french, and communication in French.<\/p>\n

NAYF brings together 25 teenagers from across Canada for an intensive week-long training program that prepares participants to become youth ambassadors of French, while at the same time, giving participants a chance to build friendships with other students interested in leadership and linguistic duality. This past summer, I was one of those students and it was an excellent opportunity for immersion and engagement in the community.<\/p>\n

During our week of online training this August, we were introduced to several Francophones who were passionate about the French language and culture, this included Mathieu Gingras and Shawn Jobin to name a few. Through these role models, we learned leadership skills, communication skills, as well as different topics such as linguistic insecurity, and how to start our own projects to promote bilingualism.<\/p>\n

Our days ended with evening games and activities for team building. Participants in the NAYF program are tasked with creating initiatives to promote the French language or culture within their communities during the subsequent school year. The NAYF program is open to grades 10 or 11 students Canada-wide who are enrolled in a French program at school.<\/p>\n

NAYF was a unique opportunity to meet other French students from across the country and strengthen language skills. If you\u2019re looking for ways to keep up with the language and experience the francophone culture outside\u00a0of school or specific programs, there are many initiatives in Calgary such as:<\/p>\n

\nUNE EXP\u00c9RIENCE FRANCAIS DANS VOTRE COMMUNAUT\u00c9<\/p>\n

Comme beaucoup d’autres, mes parents m’ont inscrit en immersion fran\u00e7aise \u00e0 l’\u00e9cole maternelle, dependant, \u00eatre bilingue est quelque chose que je peux appr\u00e9cier beaucoup maintenant. La connaissance de plusieurs langues est une comp\u00e9tence pr\u00e9cieuse qui peut m\u2019aider \u00e0 surmonter et \u00e0 faire tomber les barri\u00e8res dans la vie quotidienne. Cependant, il n’est pas toujours facile de trouver des moyens de participer \u00e0 des activit\u00e9s linguistiques ou culturelles en fran\u00e7ais dans la communaut\u00e9. Il existe pourtant des options, notamment le Forum National des Jeunes Ambassadeurs (FNJA) par le biais de French for the Future. Une organisation dont la mission est de promouvoir les avantages du bilinguisme, de d\u00e9velopper l’apprentissage du fran\u00e7ais tout
\nau long de la vie et d’am\u00e9liorer la communication en Fran\u00e7ais.<\/p>\n

Le FNJA r\u00e9unit 25 adolescents de tout le Canada pour un programme de formation intensive d’une semaine qui pr\u00e9pare les participants \u00e0 devenir de jeunes ambassadeurs du fran\u00e7ais, tout en leur donnant la chance de nouer des amiti\u00e9s avec d’autres \u00e9tudiants int\u00e9ress\u00e9s par le leadership et la dualit\u00e9 linguistique. L’\u00e9t\u00e9 dernier, j’\u00e9tais l’un de ces \u00e9tudiants et ce fut une excellente occasion d’immersion et d’engagement dans la communaut\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Au cours de notre semaine de formation en ligne en ao\u00fbt, nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s \u00e0 plusieurs francophones passionn\u00e9s par la langue et la culture fran\u00e7aises, dont Mathieu Gingras et Shawn Jobin pour n\u2019en citer que quelques-uns. Avec ces personnes, nous avons \u00e9tudi\u00e9, des comp\u00e9tences en leadership, en communication, ainsi que diff\u00e9rents sujets tels que l’ins\u00e9curit\u00e9 linguistique, et comment lancer nos propres projets pour promouvoir le bilinguisme.<\/p>\n

Nos journ\u00e9es se sont termin\u00e9es par des jeux et des activit\u00e9s de coh\u00e9sion d’\u00e9quipe. Les participants au programme du FNJA ont pour mission de cr\u00e9er des initiatives visant \u00e0 promouvoir la langue ou la culture fran\u00e7aise dans leur communaut\u00e9 au cours de l’ann\u00e9e scolaire. Le programme du FNJA est ouvert dans tout le
\nCanada aux \u00e9l\u00e8ves de 10e ou 11e ann\u00e9e qui sont inscrits \u00e0 un programme de fran\u00e7ais \u00e0 l’\u00e9cole.<\/p>\n

Participer au FNJA \u00e9tait une occasion unique de rencontrer d’autres \u00e9tudiants fran\u00e7ais de tout le pays et de renforcer mes comp\u00e9tences linguistiques.
