Fantastic Planet Public Art Installation
March 12 - April 12| Free
Look up! Waaaaay up! Massive ‘humanoids’ are taking over downtown Edmonton from March 12 – April 12, 2021!
Fantastic Planet is an illuminated large-scale public installation in Edmonton’s downtown core. Six giant inflatable structures, ranging from 12 metres tall when standing to 13 metres long when lying down, are installed in a variety of locations including City Hall plaza.
Head downtown to take is this incredible display, while safely physically distancing, of course. Check out the full location list below to spot them all:
- Down There at City Hall Plaza (24 hours)
- Peeping Corner at Sir Winston Churchill Square at TIX on the Square (noon-10pm)
- Poke at Allard Hall Rooftop (noon-10pm)
- What’s That at Sir Winston Churchill Square (noon-10pm)
- Comfort at Abbey Glen Park (noon-10pm)
- Over at MacEwan University 105 Street Building Rooftop (noon-10pm)
These enormous illuminated humanoids have been invading the globe recently, having travelled from afar to give audiences the impression that they have just landed and are gently exploring our ‘Fantastic Planet’. Inspiration for this light installation has been taken from the 1973 Czech/French film Fantastic Planet (La Planète Sauvage). This stop-motion science fiction film, directed by René Laloux, depicts a story set in an unimaginably distant future, in a world of gargantuan humanoids and where human beings are a feral race.
This event is part of Downtown Spark! Be on the lookout as Downtown Edmonton defrosts to reveal immersive cultural exhibits, extended outdoor patios, al fresco performances, giant art installations and so much more.
