Play is a child’s natural way of understanding the world. At First Discoveries Preschool this natural curiosity is nurtured in an engaging learning environment full of opportunities to explore, investigate, and interact – and those experiences in turn help children develop confidence, gain independence and build self-esteem.
Each child’s individuality is celebrated at First Discoveries! Daily activities are often more child-guided than adult directed, based on the interests of the students. Concepts of mathematics, science, and literacy are all incorporated into daily experiences and delivered through stories, songs, finger plays, music, movements, dramatic play, creative arts and group discussions. The teaching team provides a warm and safe environment that promotes cognitive, social and emotional growth and is always respectful to all.
Programming is inclusive and children of all abilities are welcome at First Discoveries. Teachers are sensitive to students whose home language isn’t English. Additional supports are offered through educational partners including Children’s Autism Services of Edmonton, Centre for Autism Services Alberta, GRIT, Over The Rainbow, Community Options and CASA, among others.
First Discovered Preschool has been in operation for nearly four decades. It was founded in 1981 under the name Babar’s Children’s Centre Society, and changed to First Discoveries Preschool Society in 2003. The school is licensed by both the Government of Alberta and City of Edmonton, and meets all government operation requirements.
