This Christmas some of Edmonton’s best celebrations will be happening in the heart of our city! The Holiday season in Downtown Edmonton has never been bigger, better or brighter than it will be in 2019!
Downtown Holiday Light Up!
The Downtown Business Association will be the first to flip the switch on Christmas at the Downtown Holiday Light Up! Join the fun on Thursday, November 14, 2019 from 5 pm to 6:30 pm in Sir Winston Churchill Square. It will be a throwback Christmas party of historic proportions as interpreters from Fort Edmonton Park, the John Walter Museum and the John Janzen Nature Centre set the scene. Churchill Square will be transformed into a winter wonderland with chestnuts roasting on an open fire, maple taffy twisted on snow, fresh bannock from Native Delights and, of course, hot chocolate and Christmas cookies! (These aren’t any cookies – they are famous DoubleTree by Hilton Cookies supplied by the new DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in the Quarters in Downtown Edmonton!) Classic Carollers and drummers will be leading the holiday revelry – sing along to your holiday favourites! Then feel the rush of magic as the lights come on to signal the official start of the Christmas season! After the outdoor light up, the Citadel Theatre Pavilion will also be lit for the season!
Edmonton Christmas Market
Looking for the perfect Christmas present? Find it at the new, first-of-its-kind holiday festival in the heart of downtown at ATB Place! Shop for beautiful treasures, handmade wares, festive decor and tasty treats at The Edmonton Christmas Market! This unique event will include live entertainment, stunning light installations, a winter carnival, a family-friendly beverage garden and indoor and outdoor market huts. The big guy himself will be there, taking up residence in Santa’s Knotty Pine Village, sponsored by the Downtown Business Association! Join in the festivities, shopping and fun on Thursdays and Fridays from 3 pm to 8 pm and Saturdays from 12 pm to 6 pm. The market kicks off on November 28 and runs through December 21, 2019. Admission is free for children under 4, $3 for those aged 4 to 17. Adults pay $5 admission on Thursdays and Fridays and $10 on Saturdays. Admission will be FREE from 3pm to 4pm on Thursdays and Fridays with a donation to Edmonton’s Food Bank!
Christmas in our city wouldn’t be complete without a visit to The Citadel Theatre for A Christmas Carol. This year the Citadel is marking the 20th anniversary of this Edmonton tradition with a new adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic. Don’t miss this inaugural production of the beloved story of miserly old Scrooge who is inspired to change his ways after an encounter with the ghosts of Christmas!
This year’s production will be accompanied by the second annual Dickens Fest! The Citadel’s Pavilion of Lights will be lit on November 14! Then from November 27 to December 8 enjoy all the festive holiday teas, dinner and a holiday market that make up the Dickens Fest! Look for upcoming events throughout Downtown.
