OK, Moms – I’ve got a quick question for you. How many of you are really good at self care? I mean, make it a true priority in your life? Hands up. Don’t be shy.
As moms, we so often put ourselves last. The focus is on your kids, your partner, your house, your work, your family obligations, racing to activities, getting the car fixed, calling the doctor’s office – you name it. It’s pretty rare that we take the time to truly relax, recharge and do something just for us.
Amanda Siltala knows it all too well. As a single mom, she found something as simple as getting a haircut became a huge hassle. As a hair stylist herself, she saw the struggles of her clients, either bringing along restless kids who got bored quickly, or worrying about kids left at home with a sitter. Clients who were never truly able to relax and enjoy their appointment.
There had to be a better way.
An entrepreneur since childhood, Amanda always wanted to open her own salon. Her dream was realized in late January 2019 when One Hot Mama Salon and Spa opened its doors. This shop is a beautiful little refuge in the McKernan neighbourhood. It’s a space that’s warm and welcoming with a staff team that makes everyone feel right at home. And tucked inside is a bright and beautiful space set aside for the youngest clients. Amanda was committed to opening a Salon and Spa that offered childcare – a highly underserved market in the Edmonton area.
When we walked into the shop on a recent Wednesday, Amanda, Chantel and Makayla were there to greet us. Amanda took coats while Makayla quickly ushered my excited twin daughters into the play room. Chantel led me to the lovely esthetics area and we spent an hour chatting while she executed a transformation of my runner’s feet that was nothing short of miraculous.
As my pedicure wrapped up, I zipped over to the child care to check in on the girls. Amanda had the brilliant foresight to install a camera in the kids’ room connected to a TV hanging on the wall outside the door. Parents can check in on their little ones without disrupting the fun! I decided to poke my head in the room anyway, and was quickly escorted back out by two four-year-olds who made it very clear they did not want to go home yet.
OK, then, on to my massage. Donny, the registered Massage Therapist, took a few minutes to talk to me about what kind of massage techniques he could offer, and the type of massage that might benefit me the most. He’s an experienced practitioner who has a sixth sense for not only what his clients need, but how to put them completely at ease. I’ve been dealing with a running injury that’s become chronic and Donny’s treatment helped more than anything else I’ve used to this point. Needless to say, I will be a repeat customer!
After my massage, I collected my reluctant-to-leave daughters who made me promise we could come back soon. Twist my rubber arm! I walked into One Hot Mama Salon and Spa a complete stranger and left feeling like I’d spent the afternoon catching up with old friends. Even better, I felt relaxed, rejuvenated and honestly, a little spruced up!
The entire team at One Hot Mama Salon and Spa projects Amanda’s vision for treating each and every client like a VIP. During my pedicure, Chantel told me how nice it was to work for someone who valued her input on the products she would be using. From the hair and body products, to the cleaning supplies, OHM places a priority on using good-quality products – no corners are being cut here.
The prices at One Hot Mama Salon and Spa are incredibly reasonable – and great specials are offered regularly. Need a manicure? Book one on a Monday for just $40! Pedicures are a steal at $50 on Tootsie Tuesday! Facial Fridays mean 15% off that service. Birthday party packages are even offered to help you pamper your little princess. (And don’t let the name fool you – OHM is not just for Mamas – men can enjoy a hot shave, Manly Mani or Papa Pedi, to name just a few!) Best of all, the child care prices can’t be beat at $5 per hour for the first child, $4 per hour for the second, $3 per hour for the third, and $2 per hour for additional kids.
Isn’t it time we ALL rediscovered our inner Hot Mama???
