The 2021/2022 season of the Alberta Ballet is set to be another spectacular mix of classical and contemporary works. As Canada’s second-largest ballet company, the Alberta Ballet is renowned for it’s take on traditional family favourites like Cinderella and The Nutcracker. Modern performances such as Balletlujah! – a tribute to k.d. lang, and All of Us – The Tragically Hip Ballet, present an edgier, engaging take on this classic dance form. Whether you love the traditional twirling tutu’s or are drawn to a more liberal interpretation of ballet, there is something for everyone to enjoy this season.
Swan Lake: November 5 – 7, 2021
After being postponed from the 2019/20 season, Alberta Ballet is excited to premiere their adaptation of Christoper Anderson’s Swan Lake to the world. A coming of age story set to the majesty of Tchaikovsky’s symphonic score, this eloquent ballet is sure to inspire the dance lover in everyone. Watch as young lovers Prince Siegfried and Swan Queen Odette thwart the forces of evil in this timeless tale that is sure to capture hearts of all ages.
The Nutcracker: December 2 – 5, 2021
A beloved Christmas tradition, The Nutcracker follows the tale of a young girl named Klara who receives the most magical gift on Christmas Eve – a handsome nutcracker doll. That night as she falls asleep, weary from holiday celebrations, her imagination sparks and she is taken on a dream filled adventure to the Land of Sweets! Delight as the pesky rats, a snow queen, a beautiful fairy, and the nutcracker prince all take stage as part of Klara’s spectacular journey.
Hamlet: February 18 – 19, 2021
This fresh perspective on Shakespeare’s Hamlet is presented by the Beijing Dance Theater (BDT), led by artistic director/choreographer Yuanyuan Wang. This stunning dance production showcases China’s best stage artists performing as familiar characters in a revised tale about life, death and love. The ghost of the murdered king haunts the living and the prince avenges his father, thereby destroying love and life. And witness the struggle between good and evil as the new king, the queen and the courtiers engage in transactions of soul and flesh.
Phi: Featuring the Music of David Bowie: March 31 – April 2, 2021
Dubbed a contemporary sci-fi ballet, Jean Grand-Maître juxtaposes a futuristic virtual world with the natural beauty of the live ballet dancers on stage. Inspired by the music of the late great David Bowie, dancers will perform to a soundtrack of more than 13 monumental compositions that span the legendary songwriter’s entire career – including Heroes, Ashes to Ashes, Heathen and I’m Afraid of Americans. Marvel in the display of contrasting aesthetics as you go an exploration of humanity’s growing addiction to technology. This is the seventh installment in Jean’s illustrious portrait ballet series, drawing inspiration from some of the most significant singer-songwriters of our time.
Cinderella: May 12 – 14, 2021
The fairytale classic Cinderella features all of the well loved characters from the original story including a wicked stepmother, harebrained stepsisters, a handsome prince and of course, a magical fairy godmother. Peter Farmer, renowned set and costume designer, takes us into an enchanting world where our heroine makes her dreams come true through the spirit of optimism and a little help from an extraordinary pair of shoes.
