Across from the disembodied eyes was the animatronic\u00a0tail and gargantuan head of an enormous croc; Captain Hook&#8217;s nemesis from the movie <em>Peter\u00a0Pan<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This was enough to put off our four year old neighbour. Whatever fearful things lay beyond, she\u00a0was determined not to face. Had she been able to forge ahead she may have been enchanted by\u00a0the lifelike unicorn, a cousin to the <em>Racing Stripes<\/em> zebra. According to the rep I spoke with from\u00a0the Creature Workshop it is a special touch added especially for the little girls in the audience.<\/p>\n<p>On the other end of the scale you have my two boys who have fully embraced the &#8220;scaring and\u00a0grossing out mom&#8221; stage. The rubber alien guts from <em>Pitch Black<\/em> held special delight for them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/edmonton\/how-to-make-a-monster\/how-to-make-a-monster-dino\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4063\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4063\" alt=\"how-to-make-a-monster-dino\" src=\"https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/edmonton\/files\/2014\/02\/how-to-make-a-monster-dino.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The How to Make a Monster exhibit is a travelling show from John Cox&#8217;s Creature Workshop (who\u00a0won an Oscar for his work on the animals in\u00a0<em>Babe<\/em>) and features incredible creations from a few big name Hollywood\u00a0movies, several B-movies and an unaired commercial. What struck me again and again was the\u00a0work and effort required for these creatures to come to life, and how disappointing it must be\u00a0to have that work seen by only a small audience, or worse, not to be seen at all!<\/p>\n<p>There is a very\u00a0interesting video at the back of the hall (beside the delightful <em>Pitch Black<\/em> display) that details\u00a0the enormity of <em>Peter Pan&#8217;s<\/em> crocodile undertaking, and how at the last minute, the script was\u00a0changed so that instead of a moving monster, all that was required from the croc was to open one\u00a0eye. A thoroughly frightening eye, but still!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/edmonton\/how-to-make-a-monster\/how-to-make-a-monster-croc\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4064\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4064\" alt=\"how-to-make-a-monster-croc\" src=\"https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/edmonton\/files\/2014\/02\/how-to-make-a-monster-croc.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The interactive How to Make a Monster show runs at the TELUS World of Science until April\u00a021st and is mostly suitable for all ages.
