It’s almost back to school and almost back to the 3 Rs: reading, ‘riting, and ‘rithmetic (not, apparently, spelling!) But our favourite Rs are ones that aren’t always met at school: Rhythm and Rocking! Long and McQuade offers music classes to get your kid set on a musical path.</del>

You may be familiar with the research touting music in general, and learning to play an instrument specifically, with optimal brain development in children; particularly in areas of the brain associated with math and spatial-temporal skills, verbal skills and even memory reasoning. Band and music classes at school are wonderful, but private lessons from Long and McQuade can enrich your child’s education even further. When I remember all the squeaks I wreaked from my clarinet in junior high, I know I could have used the help!</del>

For more information, watch Global News interview Long and McQuade’s Cesar Viloria-Petit talk about the connection between learning and music.</del>

Generally students at Long and McQuade begin around ages 5-9, some locations also offer classes for preschoolers. Note that some of the brass and woodwind instruments (such as trumpet, trombone, and saxophone, for example) are better suited for older children, usually around 10 when they have the physical size and dexterity to use them. Adult learners are also welcome.</del>

If you don’t own the instrument your child is interested in, Long and McQuade offers rental packages, so you can try before you buy! Lessons and rentals* are on a month to month basis – good news if you aren’t 100% positive you can commit to an entire year or semester. (*Available instruments vary by location.)</del>

Long and McQuade operates Lesson Centres at three of its five Musical Instrument Store locations in the city, making it very convenient for Edmonton area learners. More information about the North Edmonton instructors, the Northeast Edmonton instructors, and the South Edmonton instructors can be found on the website. If you have ever wanted to take up an instrument, this year is the perfect year to do it.</del>
