Fort Edmonton Park 50th Anniversary

My Fort Edmonton Park Memories

Fort Edmonton Park has been home to countless memories for families in Edmonton, Alberta, and beyond – including my own! Growing up in Red Deer, it was a treat to visit Fort Edmonton Park for a year-end school fieldtrip or daytrip with my family. I always loved touring through the houses and imagining what it would have been like to live and go to school in a completely different time period!

When I was in university, I got a taste of what it was like to live in 1885 when I donned a bonnet and apron and worked the summer in Lauder’s Bakehouse and Bakery! At that time the large bakehouse oven was still fully operational and I spent long hot days in the bakehouse baking up cookies, bread, and more to sell to visitors from the Bakery counter. It was one of my favourite jobs, with the opportunity to meet happy folks while sharing a fun historic experience!

Once I had my own children, a yearly visit to Fort Edmonton became a must-do each summer! From the early stroller days into their teens, there has always been something new to explore and discover on our annual visits, including the thrill of watching the Johnny J. Jones Midway come to life and the opening of the Indigenous Peoples Experience. I don’t think riding the steam engine through the park will EVER get old no matter what their ages, and both kids are always excited to spend plenty of time interacting with the animals!
