One of the greatest skills a child can learn is how to respectfully communicate their point–of–view. Not only will it change the dynamic of your family life and interaction, but it will also prepare them for successful adulting. Debate Camp has figured out the perfect formula for providing a safe, welcoming, fun, and intellectually engaging summer day camp for kids to grow their debate skills. That’s why they are celebrating their 20th summer in 2022, and Halifax is just one of the lucky Canadian cities that is hosting not one, but TWO separate weeks of on–campus learning at Armbrae Academy this August.

Debate Camp is not just for the experienced debated, but for kids of all abilities and comfort levels in grades 5–10. During the week, campers will grow lifelong skills such as information research, organizing ideas, communicating articulately, and working cooperatively within a team. Through daily debating, public speaking and Model UN activities, you’ll notice them gaining the confidence needed to propel them into a new school year and beyond.

With a teacher to student ratio of 1:8, kids are divided into small groups by age and experience. Debates happen in partnerships with a focus on teamwork. Teams will prepare and engage in a parliamentary-style debate, with age–appropriate topics. For example, students from grades 5 -7 might debate ‘shoes being optional everywhere you go’, while advanced debaters might argue for (or against) ‘the production of biofuels causes food insecurity’.

Not convinced? Hear what a local Halifax parent had to say about their child’s experience last year:

“We don’t know how you made debate camp such an enriching program for children but you have the formula down pat. Our daughter came home every day with her wheels fully pumped, her bucket filled to the brim. She regularly told us all about her day – and that doesn’t always happen after camp or school. She was just so excited and needed to bring her family into the fold. She has now taught us how to debate and gave her sister the bracelet she made for her. From my heart: thank you!”
