Explore the City

Come out to see the lights and stay for the fun! Downtown Halifax is vibrant and exciting with lots of activities for the whole family to enjoy. The days are getting longer, the sun is shining bright and the city is coming alive with summer fun.

Eat.

Downtown Halifax is the home of many great restaurants and May is a wonderful time to get downtown and enjoy great eats! The month of May will kick off with Halifax’s Burger Bash. During Burger Week, local restaurants will feature tasty burger specials with discount pricing for their featured burger in support of Feed Nova Scotia.

Good news! The Savour Food and Wine Festival is back this year and the Savour Show will be happening on May 19th at the Halifax Convention Centre. Also in May, many restaurants will start to open their decks and patios… enjoy great food in our great outdoors!

Explore.

Some of the best attractions our city has to offer are located downtown and are ready to welcome you! With the weather getting warmer, take a stroll along the 4.4 km Halifax Harbourwalk, explore the new Queen’s Marque, and enjoy the views of the Halifax Harbour. Swing the afternoon away on a waterfront hammock, enjoy a tasty beverage at an open-air pub, or indulge in a sweet treat at one of the Downtown ice cream bars or specialty candy shops. Try one (or all!): Cow’s Halifax, Flynn’s Dairy Bar & Convenience, the Freak Lunchbox, Sugah! and Underground Snax.

Raining? No problem. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, the Discovery Centre, and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS) are full of family-friendly fun and are great places to spend an afternoon. And did you know that the AGNS has FREE admission on Thursdays for BMO FREE Access Thursdays from 2 pm to 9 pm?

Play.

Captured Escape Rooms and Trapped Halifax will have the whole family entertained as you try to successfully complete your challenge. Will you make the great escape or will your time run out? Looking to play and relax at the same time? The Board Room Game Café is a great place for families of all ages to have some fun (and get away from the screens!).

Speaking of play, our own Halifax Mooseheads Hockey Team and Halifax Thunderbirds Lacrosse Team will both be heading to the playoffs in May. Catch all the action at the Scotiabank Centre. Also, don’t forget the ever-popular Hali-famous submarine playground at the heart of the waterfront and the Train Station playground in Peace and Friendship Park. Play the day away!

Shop.

Shop for unique gifts and one-of-a-kind finds in Historic Properties, Bishop’s Landing, the Brewery Market, and along Barrington Street. Halifax is also home to the famous Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market and the Halifax Brewery Farmers’ Market. These bustling markets host hundreds of local producers, craftspeople, artisans, entertainers, and delicious homemade baked goods and food, each weekend.

Stay.

Park for the day or stay for the night but don’t let the parking stop you from visiting Downtown. There are actually thousands of places to park around the Downtown area. Check out this handy guide to help make your parking plan before you go. Or enjoy a ‘Haliday’ at one of the many downtown hotels! Check out all the best hotel packages here. Lots of the hotels have pools and are pet-friendly so you can bring the whole family along!

Special Events.

Anytime is a great time to visit our vibrant downtown but there’s always a bit of extra excitement during the city’s many special events. Head downtown during the month of May to enjoy the Asian Food Festival (May 16th – 22nd), the Blue Nose Marathon (May 21st – 22nd), Open City Halifax (May 28th), and the Asian Food  & Culture Carnival (May 28th).

DELIGHTFUL DOWNTOWN

When: May 2022
Where: Halifax Memorial Library Building

A note from Downtown Halifax Business Commission: Downtown Halifax Business Commission (DHBC) acknowledges the history of Grafton Park as both the Poor House burial ground, as well as a park that saw the removal of homeless encampments. Despite having no authority over the utilization and management of the park, DHBC has a role to advocate for the development of Downtown Halifax as an inviting and inclusive place for all residents and visitors. They recognize that due in part to the impacts of the COVID-19 situation, many individuals have found it more difficult to access essentials that support their livelihood and general well-being.

DHBC’s Navigator Street Outreach Program provides homeless and street-involved individuals with support to address barriers in securing and maintaining employment, housing, and access to physical and mental health services. Through partnerships with community agencies, the Navigator Program helps to ensure individuals receive the support required to make adequate and meaningful transitions.
