On Friday, August the 18th, 2017, the  78th Highlanders will practice a ceremony known as “Freedom of The City“.  This time-honoured tradition dates as far back as the Roman Empire, and was originally granted to military units that had gained the trust of a municipality. Trusted units were permitted to parade through the town with “drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed.”

The 78th Highlanders begin their parade at 11:00 am inside the fort. Following the traditional firing of the noon gun, the entire unit will march to Grand Parade for a proclamation ceremony at 12:15 pm and then to Government House for inspection.
