Music Therapy Sessions focus on providing an enjoyable music experience for your child while working to achieve their individual therapeutic goals. Each child is encouraged to explore musical activities that could include vocalization, singing, chanting, body percussion, exploring hand held musical instruments and assisted guitar and piano. behaviour. Music Therapy has been found to improve communication, form relationships, improve motor skills and reduce behavioural habits.
Adapted Music Lessons
Do you have a child who loves music and wishes to learn an instrument but standard music lessons aren’t providing the opportunity for success? An appropriate option may be adapted music lessons where musical instruction is presented with adaptations to accommodate the needs of each individual student. The music therapist works with the individual on skills that may include increasing attention span, improving the ability to follow directions, regulating emotions and behaviour, and improving fine motor skills. The goal is to build confidence in these skills and provide the necessary tools for success to enable the student to move forward with regular music lessons.
Disney on the Spectrum
‘Disney on the Spectrum’ is the newest music therapy program at the Conservatory and focuses on youth and teens on the autism spectrum. Disney is a special favourite for kids on the spectrum, with great singable melodies and topics and characters they can relate to. Led by music therapist and singing teacher Antonia Pigot, this group will learn to sing favourite Disney songs, explore their singing voice and discuss Disney themes with peers. The priority of this program is to experience self expression through singing and have fun with peers.
