Geodesic domes are popping up like mushrooms all over the province \u2013 but how did this glamping craze begin? Explore the fascinating history of geodesic dome camping, and find out how, when, and where your family can experience geodesic dome camping in Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n

The History of the Geodesic Dome<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The geodesic dome was patented by Buckminster Fuller\/photo: stock<\/p><\/div>\n

Although German architect Walther Bauersfeld built a dome-shaped planetarium just after the first world war, most people credit American inventor, author and visionary Richard Buckminster Fuller<\/a> as the true inventor of the geodesic home. Fuller had the dream of creating the ultimate pre-fab: a structure that could be manufactured in advance, and then shipped or flown to any location to be quickly reconstructed.<\/p>\n

Fuller coined the term \u201cgeodesic\u201d and in 1954 was granted US Patent 2682235A<\/a> for his structure with a \u201cfinished assembly as to give an extremely favorable weight-strength ratio, and withstand high stresses.\u201d\u00a0 Looking to the example of Henry Ford\u2019s Model-T, Fuller believed he had invented the perfect, affordable modernist home.<\/p>\n

The problem was, with the exception of Fuller and his wife who lived in a geodesic dome from 1960 to 1971, few American families actually wanted to live in one!<\/p>\n

The easily constructable domes became popular as futuristic-style exhibition spaces beginning with the gigantic Montreal Biosphere<\/a> at Expo \u201867, and continuing with \u201cSpaceship Earth,\u201d Epcot Centre at Walt Disney World, Florida. One of the most stunning examples of dome architecture still in existence is a series of biosphere domes spanning 5.5 acres at the Eden Project<\/a> in Cornwall, UK.<\/p>\n

The dome-revolution in camping began in 1975 when California-based adventure company The North Face<\/a> created an oval-shaped geodesic tent called the Oval InTENTion. Unsurprisingly, several of the designers were Fuller-afficionados. According to North Face lore, Fuller himself climbed into the Oval InTENTion prototype, giving his seal of approval.<\/p>\n

Fast-forward to the 21st<\/sup> century and A-frame tents have been relegated to history while permanent geodesic domes have become synonymous with another camping trend: glamping!<\/p>\n

And so, geodesic domes have come full circle \u2013 from portable tents back to permanent structures.<\/p>\n
