This Saturday night, as a special after-supper treat, the kids and I ventured to Dartmouth’s Alderney Landing<\/a> to experience the popular Christkindlmarket- a Traditional German market offering free rides, drinks, cookies and shows. \u00a0Here are five reasons why we’re glad we visited Christmas at Alderney Landing this weekend.<\/p>\n

1. Maritime Marionettes- The Christmas Story<\/strong>
\nThis gentle rendition of the Christmas story features a gorgeous nativity of favourites including cuddly animals, and a bright Christmas star. The children who watched the 15-minute performance were transfixed by the marionettes, as they hopped and glided across the stage. Truly spellbinding. 2. \u00a0Cookie-Decorating and Crafts<\/strong>
\nWhile waiting for the performance of The Christmas Story, children had the opportunity to make crafts and Christmas cookies. All the materials were provided by Alderney Landing, and the young helpers on site (local teenagers) were wonderful.<\/p>\n

3. Free Carousel Rides<\/strong>
\nA team of horses at your disposal, to ride again and again- for FREE! What could be better?<\/p>\n

4. Firefighters<\/strong>
\nIt was cool outside, but there was a significant amount of heat in the form of two of Halifax’s finest firefighters, selling their 2015 calendar. Now, I’m not sure how this fits into the Traditional German Market category, but who cares? Proceeds from the calendar go to the\u00a0Nova Scotia Firefighters Burn Treatment Society.<\/p>\n

5. Santa<\/strong>
\nWe love our Halifax firefighters, but no one<\/em>\u00a0should take attention away from the most important man of the season – dear Father Christmas. There are lots of places in Halifax to see Santa but I feel really lucky that we bumped into him at Alderney Landing because here, Santa is not so much Ho Ho Ho, as a kind and “gentle old soul”. \u00a0Beautiful.<\/p>\n

Christmas at Alderney Landing<\/a> runs for one weekend every year, but there is something going on every day at Alderney Landing<\/a>,\u00a0Halifax’s cultural hotspot in Downtown Dartmouth.<\/p>\n
