Experience the magic of theatre outdoors with 청소년을 위한 회전목마 극장 “The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito” at the Granville Island Picnic Pavilion. In partnership with Kaleidoscope Theatre for Young People, this popular outdoor, one-person show illuminates the trials and triumphs of growing up and celebrating each person’s unique talents.
Written by renowned Canadian playwright, musician, and novelist Tomson Highway, “The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito” weaves music, song, and Cree language into its storytelling. This musical cabaret features lively costumes, set, and an engaging and timely story about Mary Jane, a young mosquito with stubs instead of wings. After being sent to a small school, Mary Jane feels outcast and out of place. Bullied by her classmates and questioned by others around her only makes her feel more alone and wonder how she will ever shine brightly. Thinking of her dreams of becoming a performer, Mary Jane tries to connect with others by sharing the language of mosquitoes to teach her classmates and others about who she is. As she finds her voice, she realizes that the best way to make new friends is by sharing her language, her kind heart, and her songs with the world. Audiences will note that this ‘language of mosquitoes’ is actually Cree, and the lead actor, Danica Charlie, does a beautiful job of integrating English, Cree, and some French into this stunning performance.

The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito is a show that demonstrates the effects of bullying and discrimination in a way that children can view and understand, but also provides ways to overcome and celebrate each person’s unique strengths. The show is best suited for children and youth ages 4 and up, and runs from May 1-5th, 2024 with various showtimes depending on the day. School groups are also welcome to book from May 1-3 by calling Carousel Theatre for Young People.
