6 Surprising Things You Might Find at Alerces Spanish Preschool & Kindergarten

Alerces Spanish PreschoolAt Alerces Spanish Preschool & Kindergarten, we know that every child has their own learning style, and we welcome the opportunity to co-discover your child’s unique way of discovering the world. Through gentle guidance, outdoor fun and LOTS of hands-on playtime, we aim to nurture your child’s social and educational well-being while building a basic knowledge of Spanish in our one-of-a-kind bilingual environment. With 11 years of preschool experience, Alerces has a few tricks up its sleeve when it comes to early childhood education. Here a few surprising things you might find if you choose Alerces as your preschool home…

1| You might find your child playing in the bushes.

Alerces prides itself on providing ample opportunity for preschoolers to discover all the lessons of nature while fostering a love of the outdoors through Forest School. Don’t be surprised if you arrive to find your child emerging from the bushes with stories about ladybugs!

2| Your child may speak in words you do not understand.

It is not uncommon for parents to witness their children interacting with Alerces staff in Spanish. This can come as something of a surprise to parents who may not know the language at all, but we find it’s definitely a pleasant one!

Alerces Spanish Preschool3| Your child may come home a little messy.

Alerces offers a Reggio Emilia-inspired program. This means preschool will have a strong focus on self-directed, experiential learning. Kids will be encouraged to take on new challenges and to dive in and explore, even if it means getting a little messy in the process!

4| Your child may take up many new “languages”.

After World War II, the Reggio Emilia approach to learning emerged in collaboration with teacher, Loris Malaguzzi. One of the tenets of their philosophy is that children are endowed with “a hundred languages”.  At Alerces, this means our staff aims to help your kids grow all their languages including innovation, fantasy, construction, art, building, writing, talking, science, body, music, dance and so many others!

5| Your child may learn mindfulness through yoga

It’s not uncommon to find kids doing downward dog, pigeon, cat & cow, tree pose and other yoga poses at Alerces. We know how important movement, stillness, mindfulness and breathing are for children to learn self calming techniques, cooperation and kindness.

6| Your child may not be at preschool at all!

Field trips are an important part of the preschool experience at Alerces. We believe there is no substitute for real-world experiences and take as many opportunities as we can to explore our greater community at places like the Fire Hall, the Synchrotron, the Forestry Farm, City Hall, Sunnyside Care Home and many more.

Alerces accepts children aged 2.5  and up (30 months) who are toilet-trained. Classes are small (max 10 kids) and rotate through 5 different themed classrooms in the preschool throughout the week. Preschool programs run Monday thru Friday from 8:45am to 11:30am for part-time students and 8:45am to 3:30pm for full-time students.
