In a secluded yet still accessible location, Evergreen Brick Works is the ideal environment for kids to uncover the wilderness that lies beneath the urban landscape. Registration is open now!

Evergreen’s Winter Children and Youth Programming

Children can embrace confidence and empathy through hands-on play in natural environments. At the same time, they develop their physical skills and constructive problem-solving, building a foundation of knowledge through a focus on local nature, culture and community.

These programs provide children with direct contact with nature, creating a setting for dynamic learning through multi-sensory experiences. Participants stay active and mobile while weaving together knowledge and skill through ecological themes and engaging adventures. Meanwhile, art activities also breathe life into learning through creativity.

Nature School (Ages 6-10)

January 20-March 10, 2023, Fridays 8:45am-3:30pm

Nature School is an outdoor play and learning program for children ages 6-10. Kids can experience camp activities year-round, exploring the Don Valley’s winter forest and ravines, and developing a new relationship with the natural world.

Nature School’s seasonal immersive outdoor play-based program is rooted in inquiry-based learning with a forest and nature school-inspired methodology, which is dedicated to learning outdoors. Sessions are eight weeks long and run on Fridays from January to March 2023. Participants adventure together in two groups to create an age-appropriate experience — Junior Group: Ages 6-7, and Senior Group: Ages 8-10.

These programs inspire young learners and encourage curiosity, confidence and community. Sessions feature outdoor activities such as exploring the urban wild, shelter building, and fire-based programming. Kids also learn to use tools and create art with natural materials such as wood, fibres and clay. Further activities include storytelling, games and music to round out the learning experience.

Nature Nut Outdoor Club (Ages 5-12)

January 17-March 7, 2023, Tuesdays 4:30-6:30pm

Kids can join the Nature Nut Outdoor Club for after-school outdoor exploration in the Children’s Garden under the twilight sky!

Through active outdoor play with an emphasis on inquiry-based discovery, the Nature Nut Outdoor Club program engages young explorers, as they stay active and play creatively within a safe and inclusive setting. Participants run, jump, hide, seek, balance and roll! Evergreen’s staff members work with the kids to build their confidence and support them in taking healthy risks. These practices also cultivate authentic connections to create a sense of belonging among the children and the natural world around them.

Outdoor challenges include fort building, animal tracking, fire programming, winter arts and crafts, and more. Nature Nut Outdoor Club’s activities focus on wellness while further cultivating local ecological literacy through lived experience.

PA Day Camps (Ages 6-12)

January 13 & February 17, 2023

At Evergreen’s PA Day Camp, campers ages 6–12 unearth stories, track animals, build dens and develop new friendships at Evergreen Brick Works. They get the chance to explore the natural magic of Brick Works Campus and make new discoveries in Toronto’s urban wild. Winter day camps focus on outdoor play to activate the body and engage the mind, and in the process, they inspire a new generation of environmental advocates!

Within three age groups (Junior: ages 6-7, Intermediate: ages 8-9, and Senior: ages 10-12), campers go on adventures in the snowy valley to discover the wild side of nature in the winter. For example, they track animals through the snow, learn about survival strategies from the animals that thrive here, look for edibles, and build and play in the snow and ice around Evergreen Brick Works.

This program is a full day of excitement, from 8:45am to 3:30pm, plus extended care is available until 5:30pm.
