When it comes to learning mathematics, a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher can make all the difference. If your child already loves math or is looking for additional support in their ability to master formulas and mathematical equations, then look no further than the Math Outreach Office at the University of Toronto.

The Math Outreach Office at the Department of Mathematics, University of Toronto offers exceptional programs designed to challenge learners and spark a love of mathematics that complements what students learn in their classrooms. Learning mathematical skills is not just about learning numbers or formulas though, to be strong in math requires expert problem-solving skills, the ability to think critically and creatively, to recognize patterns, and to deduce what is being asked in a challenge or question. All of these skills are fundamental for learning in all areas, not just the math curriculum.  The University of Toronto’s Math Outreach program offers classes for children and youth from grades 1- 12. In addition to camps during school breaks and vacations, the Outreach program offers extracurricular courses in coding, enrichment, and math contests.

Contest Courses are designed to expertly prepare students to participate in national and international math contests, such as Math Kangaroo, Math Caribou, the Canadian Open Math Challenge (COMC), the American Math Competitions (AMC) and the various Waterloo Contests throughout the year by practicing common questions found on these tests, and building problem-solving skills. Students enrolled in contest courses will learn the fundamentals of problem-solving skills through fun and age-appropriate activities and will be able to quickly assess a problem by recognizing what the question is asking.

Coding Courses combine the best of math, algorithms, and coding. Through coding together, students will build their skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and mathematical concepts such as geometry, and math puzzles.

Enrichment Courses are ideal for students who have mastered the grade-level expectations at school and are looking for a play where they are continually challenged through enrichment exercises and activities.

Girls in STEM Club  Students enrolled in this program will have monthly workshops or seminars that will engage them in various topics in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). It is offered the first Saturday of every month, featuring two 75 minute workshops from 10am – 1:15pm, beginning in October and culminating in a Girls in STEM conference in May.

For Fall 2023, there are both in-person and online Contest Courses running.

  • Fall Math Contest Club (Grades 1 – 12, 5 Weeks, September -October)
  • Fall Enrichment Program (Grades 1 – 8, 5 Weeks, October – November)
  • HS Advanced Math Club (Grades 9 – 12, October – November)
  • Girls in STEM Monthly Club (Grades 6-8, 8 Sessions, October 2023 – May 2024)
