It&#8217;s home to a wide range of plant and bird life and you&#8217;ll see it all from the elevated boardwalk. As the City&#8217;s Official Plan lists it as an Environmentally Significant Area, it has seen a number of recent infrastructure improvements.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/trca.ca\/parks\/tommy-thompson-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tommy Thompson Park<\/a> (pictured)<\/strong><br \/>\nThis natural park was created by downtown construction crews tossing brick, concrete and other rubble along a road jutting out into the lake. It didn&#8217;t take long for nature to take over and it has now been designated as an Environmentally Significant Area and an Important Bird Area. There are regular special events throughout the year, particularly for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/toronto\/downsview-park-earth-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth Day<\/a>, and four nature programs run regularly: A Walk In The Park, Junior Forest Explorers, Nature Connection and Wellness Walks.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/884\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kay Gardner Beltline Trail<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nA former rail line is now a wide biking and hiking trail that covers a good portion of Midtown from Caledonia Road to a section in historical Mount Pleasant Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/explore-enjoy\/parks-recreation\/places-spaces\/parks-and-recreation-facilities\/location\/?id=980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charles Sauriol Conservation Area<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/2738\/index.html\">Moccasin Trail Park<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong>Famous for its extremely photogenic rainbow tunnel in, this 15-hectare park area at Lawrence Avenue East and the Don Valley Parkway features walking paths through a naturalized ravine forest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/28\/index.html\"><strong>Sunnybrook Park<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nThe City of Toronto developed Sunnybrook Park\u00a0 from a 154-hectare country estate in 1928. It is located north of Leaside and south of the Bridle Path. Check out the preserved Kilgour family barns, which currently serve as a public riding school! It&#8217;s also a top spot to see birds in the birds of Toronto and its Glendon Forest is an Environmentally Significant Area because of its plant and animal diversity.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17115\" src=\"https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/toronto\/files\/2023\/05\/Etobicoke-banner-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/toronto\/files\/2023\/05\/Etobicoke-banner-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/toronto\/files\/2023\/05\/Etobicoke-banner-600x30.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/toronto\/files\/2023\/05\/Etobicoke-banner-2000x100.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/toronto\/files\/2023\/05\/Etobicoke-banner-768x39.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/toronto\/files\/2023\/05\/Etobicoke-banner-1536x77.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/toronto\/files\/2023\/05\/Etobicoke-banner-2048x103.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Humber River Recreation Trails\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nHumber River provides a breeding habitat for ducks, turtles and fish and it received a Canadian Heritage River designation in 1999. It is also a significant corridor for migratory song birds and monarch butterflies (there&#8217;s even an official butterfly habitat at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/explore-enjoy\/parks-recreation\/places-spaces\/parks-and-recreation-facilities\/location\/?id=1073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Humber Bay Park East<\/a>). More than 60 species of fish live in the river including such sport fish as trout, pike and salmon. Its parks run continuously from the lake all the way up to Highway 407, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/1486\/index.html\">South Humber Park<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/464\/index.html\">Humber Marshes<\/a> (one of the few remaining river mouth marshes in Toronto), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/910\/index.html\">Lambton Woods<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/1471\/index.html\">Scarlett Mills Park<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/953\/index.html\">West Humber Parkland<\/a> (known for its many bike trails).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/466\/index.html\">Colonel Samuel Smith Park <\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nThis park features a network of paths and the city\u2019s longest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/toronto\/outdoor-skating-toronto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ice skating<\/a> trail. This loop also works great for roller skating in warmer weather. The Rouge stretches from the Oak Ridges Moraine to the shores of Lake Ontario and covers over 40 square kilometres. It includes Canada&#8217;s largest wetland, National Historic Sites, wilderness areas, historic farmlands, fishing areas and a sandy beach.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/2\/index.html\">Scarborough Bluffer\u2019s Park<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nThousands of years of glacial activity and erosion by the currents of Lake Ontario formed the beautiful natural area, now known simply as The Bluffs. In warmer temperatures, its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyfuncanada.com\/toronto\/swimming-beaches-in-toronto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beach<\/a> is extremely popular.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/29\/index.html\">Taylor Creek Park<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/data\/parks\/prd\/facilities\/complex\/441\/index.html\">Warden Woods<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nThe ravine system veers east into Scarborough as it continues up the Don Valley from downtown.
