If your child dreams of being a Broadway star, set them up for success with CTORA Academy this Fall! CTORA Academy is the best place for your child to be a part of a full theatre company and develop new friendships and skills.
At CTORA Academy, your child will sing, dance, act, and build a professional-quality production from September -March, culminating in three performances per cast for each of the two shows at the Pal Studio Theatre in March 2024. Through working with a professional production team, your child will learn about teamwork, the process of putting together a full-scale production, and the fundamentals of musical theatre.
Affiliated with CTORA Theatre, which puts on shows throughout the year, CTORA Academy offers a production-based, high-quality musical theatre program to children from Grade 4 to Grade 12 in Vancouver and Richmond. By enrolling your child with CTORA Academy, your child will not only receive a top-quality theatre experience, but your enrollment fees will go to growing the CTORA annual productions, providing jobs for professional theatre artists.
This year, CTORA Academy is excited to present TWO shows: “The Grunch,” for students in grades 4-7, and “Mean Girls, Jr.” for students in grades 8-12.
“The Grunch” is a popular new musical for children. Inspired by “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” “The Grunch” follows Rudy Grunch, a 6th grader who always feels like an outsider at school. When his classmates get excited to put on the annual school musical, he concocts a devious plan to ruin the play by stealing all the set, props, and costumes the night before opening. A fun-loving, timely musical about the importance of belonging and the inherent spirit of theatre in the face of challenges, your child will learn more than just musical theatre training by being part of this production.
“Mean Girls, Jr.” is based on the hit movie “Mean Girls,” which follows a new high school student, Cady, as she learns the unwritten rules of high school friendships, dating, and what it truly means to be “popular.” The junior version of this musical has been condensed into a one-hour show that is intended for high school audiences but maintains the great dialogue, choreography, and music of the full-length version. This hilarious show highlights the importance of being true to oneself and the pitfalls of chasing popularity.
Rehearsals take place in two locations on Saturdays. In Richmond, “The Grunch” (cast 1) rehearses from 12:30-2:30, while cast 1 for “Mean Girls, Jr.” rehearses from 3pm-5pm. Rehearsals in Vancouver for “The Grunch” (cast 2) run from 1pm-3pm, while “Mean Girls Jr.” (cast 2) rehearsals are from 3pm-5pm. There will be 3 performances for each cast of both shows for audiences in March 2024 over Spring Break. The cost is $945 plus registration fees of $25, which is an extremely low price considering the length of the program, the opportunity to work with theatre professionals, and the amount of props, costumes, and sets that go into putting together a full production.
