Family Day in Richmond 2019Come celebrate BC Family Day with FREE family fun! Bring your family to any of the 65+ fun things to do Family Day weekend. Find details below and check out www.richmond.ca/events. All activities are FREE of charge unless otherwise indicated. For those activities requiring registration, there are 3 ways you can sign up for the events:

Cambie Community Centre (12800 Cambie Road):

Family Day Breakfast (February 18, 9:30-11am)
Enjoy a breakfast of pancakes and beverages along with a performance by juggler Mike Battie. Registration required. Barcode #2716598. This is a FREE, all ages event.

Creative Play (February 18, 10-11:30am)
Play centres are geared towards kids aged 5 years and under. This event is drop-in and FREE.

Family Open Gym (February 18, 10am – 11:30am)
Enjoy full use of the sport and preschool equipment. This event is drop-in and FREE.

Youth Open Gym (February 18, 3pm – 6pm)
The FREE gym time is available for youth aged 13-18 years. This event is drop-in and FREE.

City Centre Community Centre (5900 Minoru Boulevard):

Classical Kids: Stories and Strings (February 18, 10-11am)
Clap, sing and dance in this family-oriented and educational classical strings ensemble performed by Mark Beaty and Alana Lopez of The Vancouver Island Symphony. Limited seating available. All ages are welcome but this event is most suitable for up to 6 years and parents. Price at the door is $10 for kids and $8 for 14+ years.

Creative Play – Drop-In (February 18, 9am – 2pm)
FREE drop-in for a play and social time for tots and parents. Up to 5 years with parent participation required.

Karaoke Sing-Out Intergenerational Program: Drop-In (February 18, 11:30am – 2pm)
Join in and sing along with others. Complimentary snacks and refreshment included. Designed for seniors and youth but all ages welcome.

Table Tennis – Drop-In (February 18, 11:30am – 2:00pm)
Paddles up! Play free table tennis together with family members. This event is for kids aged 6+ years

Hamilton Community Centre (5140 Smith Drive):

Zumba (February 18, 10am – 11am)
Move together to zesty Latin and international music for some serious family fun! This is a FREE event.

Family Multi-Purpose Room Activities (February 18, 10am – 12pm)
Drop-in to try a variety of activities that include crafts, a photo booth and face paint! This is a FREE event.

Basketball – Drop-In (February 18, 10am – 12pm)
Shoot some hoops together in this fun pick-up ball session. This event is for kids aged 5+ years.

Parent and Tot – Drop-In (February 18, 10am – 2pm)
Play with toddler toys and equipment and try a variety of crafts and more. Up to 5 years with parent participation required.

Family Open Gym – Drop-In (February 18, 12:15pm – 2:30pm)
Drop-in for a fun, active session with use of sport and preschool equipment.

Wacky Science (February 18, 12:15pm – 1:15pm)
Explore the explosive and somewhat messy world of potions and science through simple and safe experiments. Parent participation required. Registration required (barcode #2729557). This is a drop-in, all ages, FREE event.

Martial Arts – Drop-In (February 18, 1pm – 2pm)
Try the art of self-defence in this session that focuses on control, kicking and punching moves all in a safe atmosphere. 5+ years with parent participation required. This is a FREE event.

Stories and More (February 18, 2:15pm – 3:30pm)
Sing, make crafts and join in storytime together. Up to 5 years with parent participation required. This is a FREE event.

Badminton – Drop-In (February 18, 2:45pm – 4pm)
Grab a racquet and birdie and play!

South Arm Community Centre (8880 Williams Road):

Family Fun Time in the Gym (February 18 10am – 12pm)
Drop-in for a fun active session with preschool and sports equipment as well as crafts and face painting. Up to 8 years with parent participation required

Family Sing-a-long by Musical Expressions (February 18, 9:30am – 10:30am)
Join in the singing, instrument playing and parachute play! Familiar tunes to be played so no need to worry about not knowing the songs. Session conducted in English: 9:30 – 10:00am. Session conducted in Cantonese: 10:00 – 10:30am. This is a FREE event.

Live Puppet Show by Vancouver Puppet Theatre (February 18, 11:30am – 12:30pm)
Don’t miss this original, fun and captivating mobile entertainment show for children and all other family members. This colourful, engaging show is a chance to re-discover puppets beyond The Muppet Show and  Sesame Street. This is a FREE event.

Family Fun Fitness (February 18, 12:30pm – 1:15pm)
Get the family moving with an easy-to-follow groovy dance fitness session. This is a FREE event.

Family Open Gym (February 19, 1pm – 4pm)
Enjoy some friendly sports play with the family. Equipment provided. This is a FREE event.

Family Fun in the Games Room (February 18, 9am – 6pm)
Play a game of foosball, pool or table tennis. A variety of boards games are also available to use. All equipment provided. This is a FREE event.

Steveston Community Centre (4111 Moncton Street):

Parent and Tot (February 16, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm)
Play with toddler toys and equipment, try a variety of crafts and more. Up to 5 years with parent participation required. $1.50 per child.

Family Open Gym (February 16, 9am – 2pm)
Come by for a fun, active session with full use of sport and preschool equipment. $2.50 per person.

Family Open Gym (February 17, 8:30am – 12:30pm)
Come by for a fun, active session with full use of sport and preschool equipment. $2.50 per person.

Parent and Tot (February 17, 10am – 3pm)
Play with toddler toys and equipment, try a variety of crafts and more. Up to 5 years with parent participation required. $1.50 per child.

Badminton (February 17, 2:30pm – 4:30pm)
Come by for a fun, active session with full use of sport and preschool equipment. $.250 per person.

Family Day Breakfast (February 18, 9am – 10:30am)
Enjoy a pancake breakfast complete with fruit, juice, coffee and other tasty items. Registration required (barcode #2716206).
This is a FREE event but don’t forget to register.

Learn basic yoga postures and breathing techniques together. Registration required (barcode #2716409). 9+ years with parent participation or accompanying adult required. This is a FREE event but don’t forget to pre-register.

Family Pickleball (February 18, 2:30 – 5pm)
Try this simple, fast-paced game that combines ping pong, tennis and badminton using wooden paddles and a plastic wiffle ball. This is a FREE event.

Family Table Tennis (February 18, 2:30pm – 5pm)
Paddles up! Play table tennis together with family members. This is a FREE event.

Parent and Tot (February 18, 2:30pm – 7pm)
Play with toddler toys and equipment. Up to 5 years with parent participation required. This is a FREE event.

Youth Open Gym (February 18, 5:30pm – 7:30pm)
Play basketball, volleyball or other sports and hang out with friends. For kids aged 13 – 18 years. This is a FREE event.

Thompson Health and Wellness Open House (February 18, 10am – 2pm)
Join a Try-It class, check out the activities and meet special guests. There’s something for everyone. This is a FREE event.

Come and check out the newly renovated fitness centre! This is for kids aged 13+. This is a FREE event.

West Richmond Community Centre (9180 No. 1 Road):

Family Fun at West Richmond (February 16, 11am – 2pm)
Don’t miss arts and crafts, the Physical Literacy Street Team’s active demos, bouncy castles, live interactive drum circle, a magic show at 1:15pm and more! This is an all ages FREE event.

Spin: Training Wheels: Beginner (February 16, 9am – 10am)
Cover the basics to start to reap the rewards of indoor group cycling by learning proper techniques and posture, basic spinning drills and core strengthening exercises. Registration is required. 9:00 – 9:30am (barcode 2729278); 9:30 – 10:00am (barcode 2729280). This is a FREE events for 13+ years.

Spin and Strength (February 16, 10am – 11am)
Combine cycling and strength training to become stronger, more balanced and energized in this results-oriented class. Registration is required. 10:00 – 10:30am (barcode 2729282); 10:30 -11:00am (barcode 2729283). This is a FREE events for 13+ years.

Splash around in the wave pool with interactive water play features that include a large seahorse that pours water into a giant tipping bucket, a fun tot slide and a variety of interactive sprayers and water wheels. All ages. Regular admission rates apply. For more information: 604-448-5353

Public Skating – Drop-In (February 18, 12pm – 4pm)
Lace up your skates and glide through the afternoon. All ages. FREE admission and rentals.

Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site (5180 Westwater Drive):

Family Day Weekend at Britannia (February 16 – 18, noon – 5pm)
Drop-in and take part in Family Day events, 15 minute tours and engagement activities. Visit the exhibit in the Seine Net Loft, which explores the historic connection to local waterways and what local groups are doing to keep our rivers and oceans healthy for future generations. Children can participate in an exhibit scavenger hunt and learn how they can become “water champions”. Check out Seacology’s incredible local marine species habitat tank. Have fun discovering diverse marine life through the unique educational experience. This is a FREE event.

Richmond Nature Park (11851 Westminster Highway):

Family Fun Days at the Nature Park (February 16 – 18, 11am – 3pm)
Visit Richmond Nature Park for adventurous family fun! Explore the bog through special scavenger hunts. New this year: the Woodland photo booth! Choose a wacky animal prop, snap an unforgettable family portrait and create a take-home twig picture frame! All ages welcome. Admission is FREE but donations appreciated.

Richmond Arts Centre (7700 Minoru Gate):

Children’s Arts Festival (February 18, 10am-4pm)
Children’s Arts Festival turns 11 years old! Celebrate with fun interactive arts classes, unforgettable performances and many kid-inspired Imagination Stations.

Richmond Art Gallery (7700 Minoru Gate): 
The Decameron exhibition (Feb 16 & 18: 10am – 5pm / Feb 18: 11am – 4pm)
Take in this exhibition based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s 14th century work “The Decameron”, a collection of novellas comprised of 100 stories told by 10 young women and men secluded in a villa outside of Florence escaping the Black Plague. A series of video tableaux vivants are created, also known as “living pictures” that are carefully staged static scenes with models or actors often imitating statues or paintings. On Mon, Feb 18, drop in for all-ages art activities as part of the Children’s Arts Festival. Family friendly exhibit tours, hands-on art making with guest artists and live story-telling will be happening throughout the day. This is a FREE event.

Steveston Tram (4011 Moncton Street):

Family Day at the Steveston Tram (February 18, 12:30pm – 4:30pm)
Explore a hands-on artefact discovery table and learn about how each item was once used on Tram Car 1220. Enjoy free craft activities and take a step back in time while touring through the nearly restored 107 year old tram. Access to the tramcar may be limited due to restoration.

Steveston Museum and Visitor Centre (3811 Moncton Street):

Family Day at the Steveston Museum (February 18, 1pm – 4pm)
Take a moment to reflect on Steveston’s unique heritage on a self-guided tour though the Steveston Museum and work as a family to create a Family Day craft activity.

Richmond Olympic Oval (6111 River Road):

Olympic Experience (February 18, 10am – 5pm)
Explore the Olympic Experience, a multi-sport experience and one-of-a-kind museum! $10 family admission (up to 2 adults & 3 kids)

Family Climbing (February 18, 1pm – 3pm)
Stay active and try climbing together as a family. Enjoy Climbing to 2020 with new Olympic Sports bouldering, speed climbing and top rope. Shoe rentals available. Admission is FREE.

Family Passport Challenge (February 18, 10am – 5pm)
Activities include Olympian autographs, Vancouver 2010 Olympic Podium Photo Challenge, try speed skating session, trivia and more.

Family Skate (February 18, 3pm – 4:30 pm)
Bring the family, lace up your skates and hit the ice! Skate and helmet rentals available. Admission is FREE.
