I don’t know where April went but somehow May has shown up on my calendar. With kids in school, the months between Spring Break and summer holidays seem to fly past. The family-fun activities ramp up during the warmer months. We’ve picked a mere sampling of the great events eager to entertain people with kids-in-tow. The SHIFT Spring Fling Handcraft Market (May 5th) – are you searching for the perfect gift for mom? Feel the need to treat yourself? Looking for a birthday or grad gift? Head to West Langley Lions Hall for the ever-popular, HANDMADE-only, SHIFT Spring Fling Market.
Richmond Night Market (opens May 5th) – don’t miss this year’s Illumination Night Market complete with 30 giant teddy bears, dazzling lanterns and 6 luminary themes. The Market runs weekends until September 10th.
FREE Comic Book Day (May 6th) – the 1st Saturday in May is always FREE comic book day. Comic stores across Metro Vancouver distribute FREE comic books to patrons.
Playland opening (May 6th) – nothing says summer is right around the corner quite like the opening of Playland. And for the 2017 season, Playland is unveiling THREE new family-friendly rides. They have also made the brilliant decision to include the mini golf & climbing wall in your entrance ticket…no more needing to shell out addition money to play those two attractions.
Fingerling Festival (May 6th) – it is the 25th anniversary of the Fingerling Festival in Port Moody! 40,000 young salmon will be released, and an entire city stops to celebrate. Don’t miss out on the FREE fun!
Fraser Valley Heritage Railway (May 6th) – the interurban train ride travelling from the Cloverdale Station, across South Surrey, to the Sullivan Station opens for the season on May 6th. The 55 minute train ride plus the chance to explore the train barn is great fun for kids of all ages.
Mother’s Day (May 14th) – Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms, step-moms, grand-moms, moms-in-training, moms-flying-by-the-seat-of-their-pants, and everyone else who is helping nurture the next generation. Are you in need of a Mother’s Day activity? Check out our list here.
Cloverdale Rodeo (May 19 – 22nd) – It isn’t the May long weekend without the Cloverdale Rodeo. Families love the Country Fair with dozens of mid-way rides and heaps of family fun. Buy your tickets early at London Drugs stores to save money.
Victoria Day (May 23rd) – who doesn’t love the long weekend in May? There are lots of special events planned for the Victoria Day long weekend. Head to the Family Fun Vancouver calendar to see all the great events happening the weekend of May 19 – 22nd.
May Day Parade in Fort Langley (May 22nd) – a favourite Victoria Day event for our family is the charming Fort Langley May Day Parade. From antique farm vehicles to square dancers, and police motorcycles to bagpipes, the parade is beloved by both the locals and tourists.
Surrey’s International Children’s Festival (May 25 – 27) – all things arts-related take over the Surrey Arts Centre and Bear Creek Park for 3 magical days. Enjoy live performances, hands-on activities, and so much fun! Tickets are on sale now and they go quickly.
Ladner May Days (May 26 – 28) – enjoy 3 days of family fun! You can purchase wrist bands to hop on the rides. You can also take part in all the FREE family fun such as paddle boats, petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, live bands & much more! Please note that the parade route is changing for 2017 due to ongoing construction.
20th annual European Festival (May 27 & 28) – leave the passport at home and visit Europe without the jet lag! Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium is transformed into a magical land where Europe comes to Canada. Enjoy live performances, eat yummy food from other countries and have a heap of fun.
Como Lake Fishing Derby (May 28th) – get your kid excited about fishing! Starting at 7am until noon, the shores of Como Lake will be packed with young people learning the art of fishing. Enjoy a pancake breakfast! There are prizes for the biggest fish, smallest fish, strangest fish and more! Literally dozens of prizes to be won at this FREE event.
Vancouver Children’s Festival (May 29 – June 4th) – just squeaking in at the end of May, but we couldn’t leave this Vancouver-staple off our May events list. I still have incredibly fond memories of attending Kids’ Fest when it was at Vanier Park. I have thoroughly enjoyed taking my kids to the festival’s new home at Granville Island.
