I don’t know where April went but somehow May has shown up on my calendar. With kids in school, the months between Spring Break and summer holidays seem to fly past. The family-fun activities ramp up during the warmer months. We’ve picked a mere sampling of the great events eager to entertain people with kids-in-tow. FREE Comic Book Day (May 4) – the 1st Saturday in May is always FREE comic book day. Comic stores across Metro Vancouver distribute FREE comic books to patrons.

Playland opening (May 4) – nothing says summer is right around the corner quite like the opening of Playland. With over 30 rides and attractions Playland has something to offer guests of all ages. Thrill-seekers will love the hair-raising rides including The Beast, Atmosphere, Hellevator and the iconic 1958 Wooden Roller Coaster. More fun can be had at the Midway, the Climbing Wall, Pacific Adventure Gold, The Glass House and the Haunted Mansion.

Fingerling Festival (May 4) – it is the 27th anniversary of the Fingerling Festival in Port Moody! 40,000 young salmon will be released, and an entire city stops to celebrate. Don’t miss out on the FREE fun!

Fraser Valley Heritage Railway (May 4) – the interurban train ride travelling from the Cloverdale Station, across South Surrey, to the Sullivan Station opens for the season on May 4th. The 55 minute train ride plus the chance to explore the train barn is great fun for kids of all ages.

Royal Canadian Circus (opens May 9) – the dazzling, thrilling Royal Canadian Circus is returning to the Lower Mainland and their SPECTAC! 2019 performance is not to be missed! SPECTAC! 2019 will mesmerize, astound, thrill, and captivate audiences members of all ages. The Magnificent Big Top show includes the Flying Cortes Trapeze family, the death-defying Wheel of Destiny, Xtreme Chinese acrobat troupes, chair balancing, contortion, diablo, and fearless Motorcycle Globe and much more!

Richmond Night Market (opens May 10) – don’t miss this year’s Amazing Summer Night Market complete with a Seafood Heaven experience, a bouncy castle obstacle course, live entertainment, a magical dino park and 200 vendors. The Market runs weekends until September 6th.

Mother’s Day (May 12) – Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms, step-moms, grand-moms, moms-in-training, moms-flying-by-the-seat-of-their-pants, and everyone else who is helping nurture the next generation. Are you in need of a Mother’s Day activity? Check out our list here.

Cloverdale Rodeo (May 17 – 20) – It isn’t the May long weekend without the Cloverdale Rodeo. Families love the Country Fair with dozens of mid-way rides and heaps of family fun. Buy your tickets early at London Drugs stores to save money. 2019 marks the 131st anniversary of the Cloverdale Rodeo.

Victoria Day (May 20) – who doesn’t love the long weekend in May? There are lots of special events planned for the Victoria Day long weekend. Head to the Family Fun Vancouver calendar to see all the great events happening the weekend of May 18 – 21.

May Day Parade in Fort Langley (May 20) – a favourite Victoria Day event for our family is the charming Fort Langley May Day Parade. From antique farm vehicles to square dancers, and police motorcycles to bagpipes, the parade is beloved by both the locals and tourists.

Surrey’s International Children’s Festival (May 23 – 25) – all things arts-related take over the Surrey Arts Centre and Bear Creek Park for 3 magical days. Enjoy live performances, hands-on activities, and so much fun! Tickets are on sale now and they go quickly.

Ladner May Days (May 24 – 26) – enjoy 3 days of family fun! You can purchase wrist bands to hop on the rides. You can also take part in all the FREE family fun such as paddle boats, petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, live bands & much more! Please note that the parade route is changing for 2017 due to ongoing construction.

Como Lake Fishing Derby (May 26) – get your kid excited about fishing! Starting at 7am until noon, the shores of Como Lake will be packed with young people learning the art of fishing. Enjoy a pancake breakfast! There are prizes for the biggest fish, smallest fish, strangest fish and more! Literally dozens of prizes to be won at this FREE event.

Vancouver Children’s Festival (May 27 – June 2) – just squeaking in at the end of May, but we couldn’t leave this Vancouver-staple off our May events list. I still have incredibly fond memories of attending Kids’ Fest when it was at Vanier Park. I have thoroughly enjoyed taking my kids to the festival’s new home at Granville Island.
