Let the kids get dirty! Let the kids scramble, climb, tumble, and be free! The City of Coquitlam knew they had a hit on their hands last year. Get ready for the return of the Pop Up Adventure Playground in July 2019. The goal of the space is to encourage unstructured play and allow he kids to take safe risks. Let the kids use their imagination to build and create all sorts of wonderful worlds.
Don’t go to the Adventure Playground expecting swings, slides, and climbing structures. This playground is old school. I remember spending hours in the woods mucking about – climbing trees, digging holes, scraping knees, and eating more dirt than any human probably should. This playground harkens back to that sort of play. Your kids will clamber over tree stumps, car tires, logs, and branches. There are also spots where your kids are allowed to use hammers and nails, tarps and buckets. Seriously, this is a kids’ paradise of utterly magical proportions.
Now if your heart is racing thinking about your little one wielding a hammer, hold onto your socks because there’s more. Parents / guardians aren’t allowed in. That’s right the adults are on the outside of the fenced off area. No helicopter-parenting allowed. Bring a book. Bring your coffee. Bring a blanket. And chill! City of Coquitlam volunteers are on hand to help make sure nothing gets too wild but the whole point of the Adventure Park is for kids to just explore and be free!
Tips for a Successful Pop-Up Adventure Playground experience:
- Kids must wear closed-toed athletic shoes (no rubber shoes or sandals).
- This is not a drop-off activity. While parents are not to enter the playground, they are required to remain on-site to watch their children and monitor safe play.
- Kids are not presumed to be under the supervision of playground attendants.
- Kids can come and go from the playground as they please.
- Please do not harm plants or nail into the trees.
- Ask a play attendant for help if you have questions.
The Adventure Playground is a pilot project. The pop-up space will be torn down on September 2nd. BUT, the City of Coquitlam is asking for feedback on the playground. If your child loves the freedom and adventure, please be sure to send an email to the City planners.
