If you’ve ever wondered what life would be like as a Salmon, you won’t want to miss the Gulf of Georgia Cannery’s newest program: Spring Break Salmon Run!

West Coast waters make the perfect home for many species, yet it can also pose unique challenges for Pacific salmon as they return to the place they were born to lay their eggs so a new lifecycle can begin. During Spring Break, imagine yourself as a salmon tasked with completing a set of challenges to see if you can return to the starting point. Moving up and down the Cannery, families will complete their own set of salmon-themed activities and learn about the life and significance of Pacific salmon along the way.  Take a break from your hard work to catch the film “Pacific Salmon and the Circle of Life” by Bob Turner in the Cannery’s Boiler House Theatre. As a bonus, those who complete all the challenges will win an exclusive prize connected to the lifecycle of salmon!

What makes visiting the Historic Gulf of Georgia Cannery such a great family attraction? Situated atop wooden pilings over the mighty Fraser River, it is one of the few restored 19th-century salmon canneries remaining in BC. In its heyday, the Cannery was the largest building of its kind and the leading producer of canned salmon in BC. Now a dynamic fishing museum, step inside and become immersed in the sights, sounds, and stories of the West Coast fishing industry. Explore the massive historic building and the many hands-on, interactive exhibits as you complete your Salmon Run challenges. Use a ‘peugh’ to sort salmon at the fish bins, try boat-spotting from the dock on the Steveston Harbour, or be the captain of your own fishing boat in the Model Wheelhouse.

What’s better than spending a day at this incredible site? Admission is free for members, free for youth 17 and under, and just $13.25 for adults 18+. That makes for an affordable, educational and fun Spring Break activity for the whole family!

Know Before You Go:

  • Paid parking is available at The Cannery. There is a bus drop-off nearby, as well as limited street parking.
