Is your family up for the challenge of being a Cannery Owner? Head to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery this Spring Break to learn what it would be like to Be a Cannery Owner for a Day in the twentieth century.

Learning about fishing history on the West Coast is a blast this Spring Break! The program, available for a limited time, takes visitors on an adventure through the museum to imagine how their lives would have been different if they were Cannery owners. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery Historic Site is a must-visit attraction with plenty of interactive and hands-on activities for the whole family.

Situated atop wooden pilings over the mighty Fraser River, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery is one of the few restored 19th-century salmon canneries remaining in BC. In its heyday, the Cannery was the largest building of its kind and the leading producer of canned salmon in BC. Now a dynamic fishing museum, step inside and become immersed in the sights, sounds, and stories of the West Coast fishing industry. Explore the massive historic building and the many hands-on, interactive exhibits. Use a ‘peugh’ to sort salmon at the fish bins, try boat-spotting from the dock on the Steveston Harbour, or be the captain of your own fishing boat in the Model Wheelhouse. While you’re there, test your knowledge of ocean sustainability at the Fishing Methods touch screen. Will you be able to make it to the top of the leader board with a high score?

What’s better than spending a day at this incredible site? Admission is free for members, free for youth 17 and under, and just $12.50/adults and $10.50/seniors. That makes for an affordable, educational and fun outing for the whole family!

Know Before You Go:

  • Paid parking is available at The Cannery. There is a bus drop-off nearby, as well as limited street parking.
  • Food and drink are not permitted inside the museum
  • Admission is valid for the whole day. Visitors are permitted to exit and re-enter on the same day during open hours.
  • Due to the location of The Cannery over the water, the building is often colder inside than the temperature outside. Dress appropriately!
