Mark the start of summer at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site with a family-friendly celebration. If you haven’t visited the Cannery in a while, now is the perfect time to visit. At the Welcoming the Sun event, visitors will enjoy an afternoon of FREE programming and entrance to this popular attraction in idyllic Steveston Village.

Welcoming the Sun celebrates Indigenous culture and the dynamic fishing history of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. Visitors will enjoy live drumming and dance performances, Indigenous music, Coast Salish storytelling, and many authentic Indigenous vendors selling their goods. If you want to learn more about our local Indigenous cultures during National Indigenous History Month, which is in June, then this is the event to do so!

In addition to the lively events, film screenings will take place inside to delve deeper into the local history of the village and the Cannery.  Experience the splendor of the historic Cannery as your family explores the many hands-on and interactive exhibits to learn what life was like for the fishers and cannery processors who worked at the Cannery in its heyday. After you take in the sights, be sure to join the regularly scheduled Cannery Summer Experience tours guided by costumed interpreters.  Your family will love participating in community art projects and workshops during the Welcoming the Sun public event, and there may even be an opportunity for your art to be incorporated into a larger piece to be displayed in the community.

Entrance to this event is free and on a drop-in basis.

Know Before You Go:
