Visit Pickering Museum Village (PMV) this summer to experience hands-on and exploratory exhibits and events for the whole family! Throughout the school break, the Village will be buzzing with fun activities, including guided tours, heritage demonstrations, and much more. From hands-on workshops to creative experiences, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and learn from this summer.

Nestled on the banks of Duffins Creek, the Pickering Museum Village is the largest village museum in the Durham region! Located in the quiet hamlet of Greenwood, this heritage area charms visitors with its quaint and peaceful setting. Families can spend their day strolling along the scenic paths as they wind through 19 historical buildings from as early as 1810. The various types of structures include a blacksmith’s shop, log barn and house, schoolhouse, temperance house, and chapel.

In addition, the beautiful streetscape of restored buildings comes complete with white picket fences, period gardens, rustic porches and welcoming verandas. Guests can relax and admire the lush green countryside dotted with wildflowers and orchards where apple trees grow wild.

Explore the Collections and Exhibits at Pickering Museum Village

All season long, explore the Village’s ongoing and special exhibitions, which preserve, conserve and interpret history. At the same time, PMV aims to share community memories through the stories, material and heritage culture of the Durham region.

Roots to Rebellion — PMV’s latest exhibit, Roots to Rebellion, focuses on the triumphs and struggles of Black Loyalists in Pickering, along with their powerful legacy. Join Millie, one of the museum’s dedicated tour guides, on a fascinating journey featuring augmented reality, audio clips, and hands-on activities. Stories reveal the untold history of the Underground Railroad, the roots of community building, as well as the events that led to the 1837 Rebellion of Upper Canada. Don’t miss this captivating experience!

Gather & Grow — This temporary exhibit explores how the early peoples of Upper Canada produced and prepared food. It also explores how food has united people and communities across cultures and throughout history. Families can even become part of this exhibit by sharing their food-related stories and recipes with the museum, which may be selected for the Pickering Recipe Book for sale in the PMV gift shop!

Forging ON: The Evolution of Blacksmithing in Ontario — Have you ever wondered what it would have been like to be a blacksmith in Canada’s early days? In this exhibit, you can learn about the history of this interesting trade, including an innovative website that features an interactive timeline along with dynamic videos, showcasing blacksmiths at work.
