Sainte-Marie among the Hurons is described as “Ontario’s first European Community” as it was the headquarters for the French Jesuit Mission to the Huron-Wendat people that included barracks, a church, workshops, residences, and a sheltered area for Indigenous visitors. Although this community was abandoned and burned down in 1649, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was recreated on its original site after extensive archaeological and historical research, complete with costumed historical interpreters and activities.
