Summer Brain Gain with Spirit of Math Summer Camps

Spirit of Math summer camps keep kids engaged in learning and mentally prepared for the upcoming school year. Programs cover various meaningful math concepts, including problem-solving, graphing and pattern discovery. In addition, students challenge themselves and each other, learning topics outside of the typical school math curriculum with a group of engaged peers.

Grades 2-3

Basic Skills & Problem Solving I — For students entering Grades 2-3, this program helps kids get ready for the upcoming school year. For example, they complete addition and multiplication drills and number theory topics such as regrouping and mental math. Additionally, students tackle problem-solving topics like consecutive number problems, counting shapes, date problems, cuts and pieces, and integers.

Graphing & Discovering Patterns — How does someone explain an exact location in space? In this summer camp, students learn how to describe a location in space using the Cartesian axes, then plot points and make drawings in all four quadrants. Plus, students find out about the Tower of Hanoi, patterns in circle chords, and finally the Fibonacci sequence, plus drills and the Math Problem of the Day.

Grades 4-6

Basic Skills & Problem Solving II — This program for students entering Grades 4-6 refreshes their skills for the new school year. Continuing from the previous level, this program’s content includes integer addition and multiplication drills, number theory topics including relocation, integers, primes, divisibility rules, lowest common multiples, plus problem-solving topics, such as Venn diagrams and date problems.

Golden Ratio and Contest Prep — The Golden Ratio is an important mathematical formula, so visually pleasing to the eye throughout history that it has become the optimum shape and disposition for artwork and architecture. Students discover more about the golden ratio and investigate its use in nature. Furthermore, the students prepare for upcoming Mathematica competitions through daily math drills and Problems of the Day.

Grade 5

The Spirit of Math Grade 5 extended program for students to consolidate their numeracy skills and their understanding of numbers. In fact, this one-week program serves as a quick overview of the full-year Grade 5 program. Morning topics include relocation property, signed numbers, order of operations, factors, multiples and primes and number sets. Then, the afternoon is spent on Spirit of Math 10-minute drills and problem-solving.

Grades 7-9

Spirit of Math offers a curriculum that teaches high-performing students to develop critical thinking to help them in school as well as in life.

Probability — Advanced students entering Grades 7-9 can join this program to gain a greater understanding of probability. Starting with the basics and quickly progressing to high-level probability concepts, the course includes permutations and combinations, which is a core topic that all math students should know. Moreover, the course also includes daily multiplication drills and competition problem sets.

Transformations — This course covers a thorough investigation of transformations, translations, reflections, rotations, and dilations, as well as the combination of the transformations. What’s more, the program also concludes a competitive rally to get the students excited!
