Dive into a colourful underwater adventure at Young People’s Theatre (YPT) with “Pop! Pop!”, the first show of this renowned theatre company’s 58th season. By Linda A. Carson, with Monica Dufault and Kim Selody, this playful and sensory-rich production from Carousel Players features live music as well as puppetry. Kaylyn Valdez-Scott and Katherine Cappellacci play “Hide” and “Seek”, two very different creatures who explore an enchanting new world. As fun surprises pop up along the way, this dynamic duo discovers both uncharted territory… and each other!

Specially created for ages 2-5 (Pre-School-SK) and their caregivers, “Pop! Pop!” has a run time of approximately 45 minutes. Therefore, this production is the perfect opportunity to introduce the youngest audience members to live theatre, full of interactive sensory engagement. Toddlers and Preschoolers will love to experience the underwater world of the play alongside the characters as they follow their curiosity and explore together.

Parent and Educator Study Guide for “Pop! Pop!”

Not only does YPT consistently present award-winning theatrical productions for the littlest theatre-goers, but they also provide a comprehensive online Study Guide for each production. Embracing the powerful sense of community that only live theatre can bring, these guides can stimulate pre- and post-show discussion. Furthermore, they provide drama and music activities to complement the school curriculum.

Parents benefit from these guides to then discuss the main ideas with their kids after seeing the show. For instance, “Pop! Pop!” features themes of surprise and discovery, playing together and identifying what is the same and different. Another educational factor of YPT productions is their exploration of the Seven Ancestral Teachings of the Anishinaabe: Respect, Humility, Bravery, Honesty, Love, Wisdom and Truth. In “Pop! Pop!”, caregivers and teachers can direct children to talk about how the show is connected to the teachings of Humility and Honesty.

About Young People’s Theatre (YPT)

The largest and oldest professional theatre for young people in Canada, Young People’s Theatre (YPT) produces and presents full seasons of theatre and arts education programming yearly. This past year, YPT also unveiled an expanded and renovated theatre complex, more than 10 years in the making.

As a leader in Canadian theatre for young people (TYA), YPT strives to positively impact youth, both emotionally and intellectually. According to Artistic Director Herbie Barnes, “When young people come to the theatre – in fact, when anyone comes to the theatre – a strange and wonderful thing happens – they live a collective experience. Studies show that even our hearts begin to beat at the same time. As we look ahead to the next season, we celebrate a collective coming together – in one heartbeat.”
