Great Big Theatre Company (GBTC) offers week-long theatre summer camps throughout July and August, in locations all across the Greater Toronto Area! Participants perform plays, mime, improvisation, theatre games, musical theatre, and work with simple sets and costumes. They also get outdoors every day to do activities and play games and sports. Then, at the end of the week, the hard work comes together for a public performance performed on Friday afternoons for an audience of parents, friends and relatives.

All kids can benefit from drama training, including developing imagination and empathy, learning cooperation and communication skills, feeling emotional stability, and of course, having fun! So it’s a perfect choice for families with creative children who love to sing, dance, pretend and participate in all kinds of art.

GBTC summer camps bring kids together through improvisation, theatre games, stagecraft and performance. Their camper-to-staff ratio is small so each child can shine, both within their age group and also within the combined camp setting. As an added bonus, the daily content and performances are different in each session. Therefore, you can sign up for one or multiple weeks and your kids will never get bored!

What Happens At GBTC Summer Camps

Each summer camp week, there is new content, including new plays and musical numbers, so campers who register for more than one week of camp will have new and challenging experiences every time. Campers work together in groups, usually within their own age groups but sometimes across age levels.

To encourage equal participation by all, each age group does their part in the end-of-week show. The kids help with selecting costumes and creating sets, which are provided at the camp. Younger and older campers work with materials and content that are age-appropriate, challenging and stimulating for their own skill levels and learning styles.

Participants develop a sense of teamwork as the week’s activities progress and new elements of the final performance are created, polished and fit into place. Then finally, the end-of-week performance includes plays and at least one musical number, with group vocals and simple choreography.

GBTC fosters an open, cooperative, supportive and non-competitive environment where every child participates fully and equally. At the end of the day, every camper leaves with the joy of participation and a sense of belonging and accomplishment.

Firstly, every child at theatre summer camp is able to fully express their ideas and emotions. They play in a creative environment that lets their imaginations soar! Above all, programs nurture a space of respect, kindness and compassion.
