You’ve probably seen her smiling face looking back at you from your TV, or heard her voice on a radio or podcast sharing helpful parenting tips – Laurel Gregory is the face behind Global Edmonton’s popular Family Matters news series, which airs weekdays during Global News at 5. Her features became so popular that the series has branched out into the weekly Family Matters radio show that can be heard Sundays at 11 am on 630 CHED. Behind the reporter is Laurel the outdoorsy, active mom who loves spending her time out and about with her husband Paul, and their two sons Ewan, 4, and Finn, 1. Fresh off her return from maternity leave, Laurel was kind enough to be featured as the fifth mom in our YEG MOMS YAK series!

What makes this area great for raising a family?
It was after having children that I fell in love with Edmonton. There are so many resources for young families! From the time our first son was just a few months old, I was out and about taking him to so many activities: EPL’s baby laptime, swimming pools, farmers markets and park playdates. I feel so grateful to live in a place that has so many options.
What are your favourite Edmonton places to visit and things to do with your family?
We LOVE the river valley. My four-year-old son grabs his scooter and I strap the baby into a bike seat and we head out to explore. We spend a couple hours waving to dragon boat teams, throwing rocks and collecting sticks. We also have a tandem bike so we can go for extended family bike rides. I want our boys to grow up loving nature and exercise and it’s easy to model this with the river valley in the heart of the city.

What are your kids favourite Edmonton places to visit and things to do?
Our boys love the pool, indoor playgrounds and the Royal Alberta Museum! The best part about RAM is just when I think we’ve explored everything we’ll discover a new spot in a gallery and see something new.
