Opening night of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella at the Jubilee was a uniquely “Edmonton” occasion, and if you were there, you know what I am talking about… #GoOilersGo

Opening night coincided with game four in a best of seven series for the Oilers, and in case anyone was in doubt that we are a hockey town with a soft spot for Broadway musicals, one need only look to the jerseys in the audience to know. The women ahead of me pulled out their cell phones to stream the game at intermission, and an announcement was made about the score over the public address system (much to the dismay of my husband who was PVRing the game at home.)

A young Oilers fan hopes some of the magic will rub off on his team

The show at the Jubilee had much more magic than our hometown hockey team last night, so those who had to choose certainly made the right call going to Cinderella!

The catchy music for which Rodgers and Hammerstein are known sets the tone for the light-hearted production, and an updated book makes it feel fresh. Funny asides had everyone chuckling along. The fun really hit its stride in the second act with the actors (especially the particularly vaudevillian wicked step sister Charlotte)  hamming it up, and the audience responding enthusiastically, laughing loudly, gasping audibly…I think I even heard a full on hiss directed at Madame,  the evil stepmother.

The biggest gasps were reserved for the quick change costume transformations, which happened right before the eyes of the audience. Don’t blink, you won’t want to miss the magic!

The night at Cinderella was full of magic and a fantastic evening with the family.

And no one lost by seven points.
