The moon will pass between the earth and the sun to create a solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. A full shadow will occur along a narrow path of earth through eastern Canada, parts of the US, and Mexico. Here in Edmonton, we will experience a 23% partial eclipse that will reach it’s maximum at 12:46 pm. To safely witness this phenomenon, solar filters are required to protect your vision, and we recommend it best to view with the experts at one of the great free events listed below.

TELUS World of Science – Edmonton

Weather permitting, the RASC Observatory will be open with free admission from 11 am – 2 pm to safely view the eclipse through solar telescopes. You can also learn more about the phenomenon with a special presentation of Totality in the Ziedler Dome (included with regular science centre admission). Safe solar viewers are also available for purchase in in the Galaxy Gift Shop at the TELUS World of Science – Edmonton through the cashier.

University of Alberta Observatory

The U of A Observatory will be open to the public for safe viewing of the partial eclipse. Admission is free, but space will be limited.
